WASHINGTON -- Wesley K. Clark's fledgling presidential campaign hit another bump last night, with rival Democrats launching their toughest attacks yet on the retired general's past support of Republicans and his shifting positions on the war with Iraq.

"I must say, I've been very disappointed since Wes Clark came into this race about the various positions he has taken on the war against Saddam Hussein," Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman said near the opening of last night's nine-candidate debate in Phoenix, the fourth such meeting during the past month between the aspirants for the 2004 nomination.

"...last night's nine-candidate debate in Phoenix, the fourth such meeting during the past month between the aspirants for the 2004 nomination."

Rather than debates, these are actually weekly sessions orchestrated to bash the Bush administration donated free of charge to the DNC.

Bush-bashing is right! It's sickening to hear the dwarves trying to get their attack lines just right and to attack George W. rather than each other.

But the more exposure that they get, the more unsuitable all of them appear to the general public. Now we have Ashley Clark entering late to blunt the juggernaut of Howard Dean. Clark is just as flimsy a candidate as Dean would be--going up against POTUS. Actually, Gephart or Lieberman could be much more formidable in the general election, but they probably can't get the Democratic nomination.

Still, these weekly "debates" should not be televised and foisted on the voters as a public service. This is just the media's desperate attempt to keep the 2004 race competitive.
