Limbaugh's Secret Life
GOPUSA ^ | Monday, October 6, 2003 | Carol Devine-Molin

We conservatives are all saddened by the news that Rush Limbaugh is being investigated by law enforcement authorities for illegal buys of prescription painkillers. If accounts being bandied about the media are accurate, then Limbaugh: a) has procured tremendous amounts of highly addictive narcotic medications from his pill-pushing housekeeper Wilma Cline, and, b) is likely to be subjected to arrest. Oh, by the way, dear Wilma sold her hot celebrity story to The National Enquirer for about four hundred thousand dollars. Am I surprised by the overall situation? Yes and no.

Given Limbaugh's outstanding analytical mind and sharp wit, it's difficult to believe that he's constantly in a drug induced state. Who is more articulate and funny than Limbaugh in the world of political commentary? Nobody. However, the hard truth is this: Among entertainers, media personalities and politicos, substance abuse exists in epidemic proportions. For that reason, many conservatives have quickly moved beyond denial and are prepared to hear the worst of it. And I think the majority of conservatives will continue to be compassionate and supportive toward El Rushbo as long as he embraces rehabilitative efforts.

Limbaugh is clearly the most influential conservative of our era, with a radio audience of up to thirty million listeners each week. He's probably converted more Americans to the conservative persuasion than any individual except Ronald Reagan. Understandably, Limbaugh's myriad political foes rejoice in his current troubles. Al Franken and the radical Left are ecstatic. If the tabloid piece largely pans out, Limbaugh has provided his enemies with significant ammunition in efforts to discredit and silence him. But will those hostile to Limbaugh ultimately succeed in ruining him? I doubt it. His current woes are definitely a setback, but not insurmountable. I would state one pivotal caveat. The only individual who can really bring down Limbaugh is Limbaugh himself. Conservatives will maintain solidarity with Limbaugh if, and only if, he dedicates himself to being clean and sober. However, if Limbaugh continues to dabble in drugs, his legion of fans and listeners will slowly drift away.

Although most people are focused upon Limbaugh's legal circumstances, much more is at stake. Drug addiction is a life-threatening condition, which requires proper intervention. Reports indicate that Limbaugh had been rapidly detoxed twice, but returned to drugs both times. Of course he has to undergo another detoxification, and not of the dubious "ultra-rapid" variety that is completed in 24 hours. But what about follow-up care? I'm referring to a program of drug treatment to prevent relapse.

On the other hand, if Ted Kennedy admitted an addiction to painkillers, how many here would be supporting him?

I don't think we should be so judgemental. I've been around lots of older people who need drugs to kill the pain they suffer. I just can't come down on somebody who is suffering great pain. This is different than college kids smoking dope just to tweak their parents, or rock musicians snorting cocaine for fun. This is a battle against physical torture. Would you judge someone trapped in the dungeons of Saddam Hussein? Then don't judge someone whose body afflicts him with the same level of pain, with no respite but a pill.

I still think we need legal restrictions, but given that Rush was able to function normally despite taking enormous quantities of this drug, I suspect that the restrictions need to be re-examined.

Your use of the word enabler is a giant KEY. Common folk such as we have here on FR have literally no idea what narcotic drug addiction is.

It is evident that Rush Limbaugh does not either. He has no idea what they are going to do to him in rehab. He must come to the realization he is a junkie. A twisted soul whose brain is CONTROLLED by the narcotic.

Rush is still making excuses for himself as are all the well meaning enablers here on FR. He thinks 'prescription' and 'for pain' and 'after surgery' make him different. Until he is disabused of this self induced chicanery he has no hope of cure.

Junkies are not normal human beings any more. They have a strong psychosis that has taken them over. You FR enablers need to grasp this or you too could become hopelessly addicted or enable your loved ones to become so.

I guess I need to add:

I KNOW drugs. I've been clean for thirty years but I was once as dirty as you can get. In all that experience I have taken pain killers stronger than aspirin or other over the counter pills twice. That's two pills. Not because I'm so strong but because I'm scared to death of narcotics and have been since I saw first hand what they do.

Rush has no excuse. His physical pain is no more excuse than the emotional pain that drives an inner city denizen into heroine addiction. He is guilty guilty guilty and you enablers are not helping him.

Mercy, I appreciate most of your sentiments, but aren't you a little-over-the-top? True, drug addiction distorts the personality (lying, manipulation, denial, etc.), but it doesn't make the drug abuser "psychotic". Let's remember this: More than half of this nation is obese, and is willing to take orders from a chocolate bar. That's not a form of addiction?
Limbaugh can go through treatment successfully --- give him a little credit. He'll do just fine. But he will have to monitor his inclinations the rest of his life.

That was one of the best posts I've ever read on this forum.

I especially agreed with the following:

" I saw what the Democrats did for Clinton everytime he was caught doing something wrong We, as Conservatives need to rise to a higher standard. The death of right and wrong has to stop at our door. "

You are exactly right. So many posters here are guilty of the same type of denial-of-mistakes that the liberals are of their own (your Clinton example being a perfect illustration of this) and I agree that conservatives need to rise above the name-calling crap that liberals engage in, as it is usually the last defense of the desperate and the guilty.

I applaud everything you said.

Sorry but you just don't have enough info. I guarantee Rush is not where he needs to be for recovery. All I had to do was listen to his syntax. He's making excuses for himself and cannot admit the true reality of his condition to himself.

He is an egotist and one must be thoroughly humbled in order for real healing to begin. He's not there. I doubt he gets there. He's talking like a junkie not a penatent. He's just conning himself and us.

Synthetic heroine is a great drug. Especialy for certain individual physiolgies. They don't get stoned ... they become exhilerated and actually experience enhanced brain function.

Life with out the drug is not worth living. They would rather have twenty years or so high ... than a good long life just normal. Truth is they won't get twenty years. Ten if they are lucky.
