Then stop for a moment.

Think about how you yourself would wish to be judged. He has admitted that he has a problem, to the entire world!

And then think... should he be given a chance to redeem himself?

Because in my book, I don't know that I could stand up to the same harsh scrutiny. I am not perfect, and I would think the fact that he has painfully admitted this to the entire world shows just how vulnerable he is at the moment.

His addiction does not make any of his beliefs less valid, today, does it?

Yes -- it makes his support for the War on Drugs less valid.

His addiction reflects on each and every word he has said so long as he has been in its grip. And if he mocked treatment programs, light sentences, the foibles committed by stoned people, then you had better understand just how that plays out.

It is one thing to oppose programs or legal policies based on effectiveness, cost and/or psychological studies, but when a person makes it a point to disapprove of the programs while belittling those who need them, then expects kindness and sympathy when he has trouble, then there is a problem.

We reap what we sow. In his instance, he is asking for more kindness and understanding than he was willing to extend to others.

No, of course not but in this case the messenger who is in fact a leader is damaged I fear. I regret and am a little resentful he gave our enemies so much ammo. He knew better.
