Cluster headaches are treated briefly with steriods and for longer periods of time with anti-convulsants; Tegretol, in particular. Anti-convulsants are not addictive. Cluster headaches are believed to have a causal relationship with heavy smoking and/or allergies and are referred to as "suicide headaches."*

You're absolutely right. Betamethasone gave me some relief, and when I didn't have any I flipped out badly. It was psychological, not physical. Imitrex helped me out a lot as well.
