The 16th amendment doesn't tneed to be repealed, since it says: "Congress shall have the power to...", and NOT, "Congress Shall..."

True.

I'm not averse to limiting Congress' power to tax, though. Repeal the 16th Amendment, define all taxes on a person's income as "capitation taxes," and cap excise/tariff rates at a rather low amount when not in a state of declared war.

These corporations can concentrate on their core businesses which will increase efficiency and lower costs.

Oh, so it's true, the reason for a national sales tax is to shift the tax from corporations to the individual.

Before you tell me (again) that I already pay their taxes, let me tell you I don't...For example I don't pay the taxes of Ford or GM because I don't buy new cars and I don't buy parts and service at their dealers...

Under the phony national sales tax that wouldn't be the case because they would be releived of their tax burden(s) that would then be redistributed throughout the consumption tax base...Every consumer would in effect be paying the taxes for all the corporations whether you purchased their products or not.

One of the shibboleths they used to raise against a flat tax was "But you can't take away the mortgage interest deductions!"

With historically low rates, the tax benefit is much less.

You are already paying that higher 30% in the cost of the product.

That isn't possible. For starters, though they wouldn't be paying FICA to the government, they would instead be paying it to the employee...If you think you're going to get that $40,000 vehicle for $28,000 AND have more money in your pocket you're dreaming.

The free market would spur competition in a fair tax system.

LOL! And after everyone drops their prices as low as possible, how will the fools compete then?...If they're smart they'll do now, what they'll ultimately have to do anyway.

Only a fool thinks price is the only way to compete and that a one size fits all, blanket government tax reduction is equivalent to competition. If you don't believe that just take a look at what's happened recently with American auto makers offering endless rebates and interest rate incentives and the Japanese offering quality along with new product line. The Japanese GAINED market share over the Americans.

The major reason I oppose switching from an income tax to sales tax is it really sets the foundation for increased taxation in the future. All you have to get is some socialists in the Senate and in the whitehouse and you're looking at a Federal income tax with an added Federal sales tax. The already huge chunk they take out of us in taxes will be even more.

I want a flat income tax that is simple and easy to pay.

It's always a worry that the out-of-control federal government will add more taxes to our already huge burden, sorry to say. We are already so far down the path of socialism, it is dispiriting - that's why I stop in at FR!
