When a long-serving politician leaves office, media types generally tend to reflect fondly upon his career -- to recall the highlights, gloss over the embarrassments and heap praise on his dedication to public service.

But what is one to do when there is virtually nothing praiseworthy about a long-serving, retiring politician

One down, many, many to go.

I've been talking with my congressman and senators, trying to educate them on technological issues and how they tie into terms they can understand, like rights, privacy and the economy. They do seem pretty receptive.

One quote I remember: "What's open source software?" when I was discussing a rediculous P2P bill (H.R. 2885) coming up in the House. That's how far behind they are, folks.

You need to educate them if you want them to make sound decisions.

When I lived in South Carolina, I met and spoke to both Hollings and 96 year old Strom Thurmond. Strom was intelligent and articulate. Hollings was a senile, blathering idiot.

The media always portrayed the exact opposite of this.

Can't think of anything he accomplished in the Senate but when he was governor, he instituted the South Carolina Technical Education School System. It has been good for SC and I have to give him credit for that. Otherwise, I draw a blank.

Fritz is living proof of how hard it is to unseat an incumbent, even an arrogant, stupid one like him. I am a constituent and his office will not respond to my requests to explain why he voted against Estrada's nomination. He can't leave office soon enough for me.

It is not a victory when your enemy decides to retire to his castle to enjoy the spoils of his longstanding corruption-it is evidence of your own weakness.

Any more "wins" like this, and we are undone.

He signed the bill that put the Confederate battle flag on top of the South Carolina Statehouse in 1962. Funny how the media never told you that during the flag flap a couple years back, huh?

Hollings is a dangerous man on technological issues, especially your information privacy, copyright, and intellectual property. He is so firmly in the pocket of Big Mouse, the RIAA and MPAA, and the "entertainment" companies, that he is now basically their shill. Ironically (and sadly for the Republican party), the legislator that may be the most savvy on those tech issues is a Democrat--Rep. Rick Boucher, Ninth District of Virginia.
