Fiscally conservative and socially tolerant Republicans are probably the only type of conservatives who can win in very Left leaning states. They've made their peace with the fact the public is pro-choice, wants to keeps guns out, and wants to let gays live their own lives. It won't please the RKBA crowd and the social conservatives. But it can help Republicans advance smaller government without being made to look like trigger happy rednecks or judgmental puritans. They deprive the Democrats of their wedge cards and force them into the position of arguing for higher taxes, bigger spending, and a buffet of benefits for illegal aliens. As a result liberals look like the kooks and wackos they are. Granted, it doesn't meet the "gold" conservative standard but it keeps socialism from continuing its relentless spread through the body politic.

A very, very difficult lesson to learn, but learn it we must.

Most of the public doesn't want the FBI in the gynecological exam room. Big federal government laws just won't work for social issues. Better to be the party of powerful moral leadership.
