Did they get eaten or were they just mauled? I can't tell from the different stories floating around.

Eaten. And they tasted like chicken, according to the bear!

"Did they get eaten or were they just mauled?"

The bear was aging them under a pile of leaves. They usually do that for a couple weeks, or so, 'till they've aquired a suitable flavor, then dinner starts.

The remains were partially buried which indicates some of them was eaten.

Bears usually eat humans abdomen first. That is why they think humans taste like sh!+, predigested food. Yum. The rest of skin, meat, bones, and polartec is often left to season under a pile of leaves and soil for a fortnight to slime. Enzyme rich, slimed human corpses taste even better to urus.
