ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The graphic sounds of a fatal bear attack were recorded, Alaska state troopers discovered Wednesday while reviewing a tape recovered near the bodies of a wildlife author and his girlfriend.
Trooper Chris Hill said Timothy Treadwell may have been wearing a wireless microphone likely activated when he was attacked by the brown bear at Katmai National Park and Preserve. The videotape has audio only; the screen remains blank for the three-minute recording.
"They're both screaming. She's telling him to play dead, then it changes to fighting back. He asks her to hit the bear," Hill said. "There's so much noise going on. I don't know what's him and what might be an animal."
The bodies of Treadwell, 46, and Amie Huguenard, 37, both of Malibu, Calif., were found near Kaflia Bay on Monday after an air taxi pilot arrived to pick them up. The pilot contacted the National Park Service and state troopers to report a brown bear was apparently sitting on top of human remains at the campsite.
After rangers arrived one of them shot and killed a large brown bear when the animal charged through the dense brush. Rangers and troopers later killed a smaller bear apparently stalking them.
An autopsy on the human remains confirmed Wednesday the couple were killed by bears.
Troopers recovered video and still photography equipment as well as three hours of video footage from the site, across Shelikof Strait from Kodiak Island.
Much of the footage is close-up shots of bears for which Treadwell was well-known.
Some scenes show bears no more than a few feet from Treadwell, co-author of "Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears in Alaska." Others show a more timid Huguenard leaning away as bears come close to her on the bank of a river.

After carefully reviewing your posts on the threads, it has become quite clear to me that you are a hoot!
My husband was reading this post of yours over my shoulder yesterday:
Actually a 22 cal or 25 cal is best for bears.
He questioned your sanity at this point.
You can concel it from the rest of your group and pull it out if the bear charges. You then shoot the person right next to you right behind the knee and then run like hell. The bear will normally eat the slowest person in the group.
By now tears were in his eyes from laughing so hard.
Thank you, sir, for the entertainment and your service to our country.

There was no mistaking Timothy Treadwell on the ''Late Show with David Letterman'' last Tuesday night (Feb. 20, 2001 and on re-runs). He was the guy in the blue suit who looked like a shaggy-blond rock star and told viewers that the brown bears he lives with in Alaska are mainly harmless ''party animals'' out to have a good time.
When Letterman asked whether the bears might someday kill him, Treadwell said he feels safer living among Alaska's grizzlies than jogging through Central Park in New York City. Besides, he said, a fox yips a warning when bears come near his tent.
His death was a pretty certain thing. Party animals, I laughed at that, I'll admit it.

Rebecca Dmytryk, who oversees an animal rescue organization in Malibu, recalled other video footage of Treadwell before his death that showed him in a streambed near an older bear he nicknamed "Quincy."
"Quincy, do you remember when you stood over me? You were so hungry, and you should have eaten me, but you didn't. Thanks for not eating me, Quincy," Dmytryk recalled him saying to the bear in the clip. "If Quincy had eaten me, good, 'cause he's a nice bear."

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/10/09/1065676096195.html Mr Wilkinson said the tape begins with sounds of Mr Treadwell screaming that he is being attacked and calling for help to 37-year-old Ms Huguenard, who was apparently still inside a tent. "It's obvious that the attack was going on before the tape was turned on," said Mr Wilkinson, who quoted from the tapes.
"Come out here; I'm being killed out here," Mr Treadwell said. "Play dead!" Ms Huguenard yelled in reply.
That strategy is commonly used to pacify angry bears in an attack. But Mr Treadwell told Ms Huguenard the strategy was not working and she urged him to "fight back".
Mr Treadwell, who never carried weapons, then asked her to get a pan and to hit the bear, police said. At that point, the tape - much of it fuzzy and inaudible, stops, Mr Wilkinson said.

You can easily get off 11 aimed shots from a 9mm in 5 seconds. You're right. I'm out in bear country fairly often, and I carry a .44 MAG. No one up here recommends anything less than a .44MAG or a 12 gauge. It can be done with less, but not worth the chance.

Actually a lot of people question my sanity which is why I am on 100% disability for PTSD. The VA agrees that I am crazy. When interviewed after asking all the questions about did you really disarm bombs everyday, they also asked me if I had nightmares. I explained to them, yes I do have nightmares since my daughter has remarked on occassion I keep waking her up by screaming loud enough for her to hear on the other side of the house at 2:00 AM. I was quick to explain that the nightmares were not about my experiences in bomb disposal, that matter of fact I kind of missed doing that and wish I could do it again. The VA at that time determined I might really be crazy.
PS: I never have told my daughter that the nightmares were about her mother (ex wife)and her mother's lawyer.

Thanks for that link. Now I recall seeing that story and thinking the guy was an idiot. He thought he was "one with the bears" and the bears were his brother or some such nonsense. Probably smoking that Alaska weed too much.

I'm glad I remembered it the right way. I'm not likely to try it either, though. I'm not sure that the bears always follow the rule. :-)

Thanks for the "before" shot. Here is an after shot:
This really isn't him but probably a pretty close resemblence...
Here is a look at the over grown "Party Animal" that did it:
