the FATHER wanted to actually RAISE HIS OWN SON, as he saw fit...but some "family values conservatives" didn't like that idea.

Just pointing out that the Elian mess was not an easy-to-solve problem, but that it was messy. (I seem to recall that there were a lot of strange bedfellows in the Elian debate).
