Wednesday October 8, 2:37 pm ET
WASHINGTON, Oct 8 (Reuters) - U.S. demand for crude oil and refined petroleum products in September decreased 1.5 percent from a year earlier, the government said on Wednesday. Oil demand last month dropped 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 19.2 million bpd from the year before and was 1.2 million bpd less than August, according to preliminary data from the Energy Information Administration. However, petroleum demand during the first nine months of this year has averaged 19.9 million bpd, up 200,000 bpd, or 1 percent, from the same period in 2002, EIA said. The Energy Department's statistical agency also said gasoline demand in September was up 300,000 bpd, or 3.5 percent, from a year ago to 9 million bpd. Distillate fuel demand, which includes diesel fuel and heating oil, was unchanged at 3.7 million bpd in the latest month. Jet fuel use last month fell 100,000 bpd, or 6.3 percent, to 1.5 million bpd from a year ago, EIA said. EIA's estimate of September petroleum demand and imports (in million barrels per day) is as follows: . 2003 2002 January-Sept . -- Estimated -- .
