>>The first time I ever thought about this was in an Art History class, when the professor told us that all education amounts to is knowing how to find out what you need to know. It is the only definition of education I have ever heard that made sense! The professor, Dr. Robert Engass, had a Ph. D. in Art History, but he knew that was not the reason he was an educated man.<<

This brought tears to my eyes. My dear departed daddy had an honorary Associates Degree from a local community college. They gave it to him after he taught there in the 70's. He was brilliant. In his classes he said the same and had nothing but research papers to make the grades! Back then, work experience was as good as that piece of paper.

If there are no jobs, an educated person can make a living by discovering a need in his/her community and filling that need.

I would say this is true, to a point.

I can do just about anything, from designing and building a hog barn to designing and building a data network.
If my job falls through tomorrow - I would be looking for another job tomorrow.
In the meantime, I would be finding something to do to earn any money I could just to try to alleviate the bills that would still be coming in.

Sometimes, however, especially in the case of younger people, they don't have the experience to handle that. How do they get the experience you ask?
It's called the school of hard knocks.
Let 'em have a week where all they have to eat is a head of lettuce, a full salt shaker, and tap water.

I't may sound hard but, from experience, it works.
