[history]
WASHINGTON (AP) - A gasoline additive once lauded for cleaning up the air is being phased out because it's also contaminating drinking water. Now its producers want Congress to protect them against what could be billions of dollars in cleanup costs.

And they have powerful congressional Republicans on their side,
including Majority Leader Tom Delay of Texas, where most MTBE is made, who insist the liability waiver be part of an energy bill moving toward completion in Congress.
There is no such thing as a conflict of interest these days, it seems.

hahaha... so much history behind the MTBE issues... Mostly put into the gasoline by the oxygenate lobbyists, and the legislatures, idiots!! Chevron told EPA they can have cleaner gasoline w/o additives. But nooooooo, the environmental wackos thought else wise!
Jodi Waters of Oxybusters, Lodi chapter was the forefront on MTBE in California, along with KSFO!

Ain't it kind of ironic that Davi$ will get his butt booted out of office before we get MTBE out of gasoline in California.? ;-)

Sadly, the after effects and costs of Davi$ and MTBE will be felt for years and years to come , however.

A gasoline additive once lauded for cleaning up the air Does it even do that, when used in modern autos (which have computer-controlled engines and catalytic convertors)?

Tom Delay is SUPPOSED to represent his state. That's not conflict of interest.

Who does he swear an oath to when he assumes office in Congress? just curious.

The EPA knew full well what was going to happen before they ever mandated this stuff. I say hold those officials and drones to the same standard as we would hold Corporate Joe the CEO. Sue them personally and take every single thing they own and throw them in prison for life. The EPA should be forced to pay for all of the damages IT caused out of their stagnant or reduced budget.

I'm not positive on this but I believe they only swear to the uphold the Constitution.

It was a Democrat Congress in 1990 that passed the Clean Air Act
which mandated the use of oxygenators. And the Democrat-controlled EPA
whose regulations specified MTBE! The real liability lies with the Congressional envirocrats.
If I ran an oil company that was forced to invest billions in MTBE production just so that I could continue to sell my product, you damn right I'd want some protection.
