The victims, believed to be in their late 30s to early 40s, were from Malibu, Calif.

No further comment.

I'm sure they probably watched several of those PBS wildlife specials that tell all about how to behave in bear country. I was raised in bear country. PBS is in the bear hors d'ouevre business.

Bears will eat anything. It is important to never smell like food, Look like food, or be food. Being armed with a very powerful firearm is the only way to prevent becoming food if the bear decides you smell like or appear to be food.
Not to mention bears can get aggressive for no apparent reason(to humans at least). Being armed with a very powerful firearm is the only way to stop an aggresssive bear.
I'm guessing these victims were not armed.

Yep...and being from Malibu I'll bet they were Yugo drivers.

I believe there was a recent article in a backpacking magazine about how to survive around bears in Alaska. The article had pictures of some guy within 100 feet or less of grizlies. Said he'd been doing it in Alaska for years. Said they keep their kitchen over 200 yeards from their tent.

I think they're idiots.
