You have been "hosted".

I don't think that's it. I just fixed a computer here with that trojan. When the user tried to use a search engine, the browser was redirected to "tweakxp".

If you don't have a virus, and your host file has not been changed, and it is now working, then congratulations. You don't have a problem. Your ISP could have had a temporary routing problem, or routing tables could have been updating anywhere along the path from your computer to google due to a router being down or upgraded or just screwed up.

We had the same problem on Sunday. As per FR advice, we downloaded Symantec and Microsoft patches but still had the problem. Then we received wonderful advice from this site that worked for us. Search all folders and files for anything that says HOSTS. Change the extensions to Hosts.old and your problem should be solved. Good luck.

I've seen a similar problem on our network for several months. Not all workstations are unable to use the http://www.google.com url, but for many, it takes them to a page with a small icon in the upper left corner, with no google functionality. Try this url. It worked for me and many others.

Have you contacted your carrier directly? They may be experiencing problems and can at least put your mind to rest that it's not your computer.

I've been having periodic problems accessing Google over the past few weeks, both from my home computer, and from my work computer which is part of a highly secure and well-maintained network (financial institution). I think there's a problem that's specific to Google. Try AlltheWeb.com as an alternative -- unlike Google, AlltheWeb accepts sponsored links from gun/ammo dealers.

first time poster, long time lurker

know it is a busy night but re: Google

been having this problem for days re: yahoo and google. Was driving me crazy.

THANK YOU to the Freeper who suggested typing old behind the HOST files.....worked like a charm. Freepers are the BEST.

Follow question, does that mean my computer was/is vulnerable in some way?

You are welcome. Another kind Freeper gave us this solution last Sunday after the download of patches did not work. To play it safe, clear your register and run your virus software (go to www.lavasoft.de and download free version of adware, it works). Good luck.

Am I logged in NOW?

FWIW Google is ok here this morning. I'm thinking it was either one of the servers we go through here or maybe a local name resolution server on the net.

BTW you are correct, cats are revolting.

I am still having a problem with the ePanel stating there is no ISP. What to do? Help ... for the non-technical type! I have gone to MS and downloaded the security patch but continue to be unable to access google.com.

This worked for me when I was getting the cPanel page.

goto http://www.images.google.com that should bring up the image search page, then click the search tab and you're in
