Bob Graham Ends Presidential Campaign

Tuesday October 7, 2003 3:01 AM

By NEDRA PICKLER

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bob Graham, a political veteran whose low-key style failed to gain traction in the crowded Democratic presidential race, said Monday night he was ending his campaign.

``I'm leaving because I have made the judgment that I can not be elected president of the United States,'' Graham said in announcing his exit from the race on CNN's ``Larry King Live.''

He said he was not successful because he started his campaign too late and had trouble raising money.

OTOH, maybe just maybe, the American voting public wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea of having someone who took notes all day long about his sock color, his lunch menus and likely his bowel movements as President and CIC.

Any bets on who falls out next? I say Dick Gephart. Then Carol Mostly Fraud. Then Wesley Clark.

but wait -- didn't he already withdraw, a couple of days ago? this is like those times when you hear an elderly entertainer has died and you could just swear you remember his dying in 1987.

A thoroughly disreputable and dishonest putz. Now kick him off the Senate Intelligence Committee--it's obvious he has none.

He didn’t tell his top campaign staffers, and they were left to speculate about the future of their jobs until the announcement on CNN’s “Larry King Live.”

You can almost hear his brain working. "Treat the staff fairly, or get a few more minutes on CNN?"

OK. He's out, so he's obviously going to run for re-election in FL. We must rally around a candidate to defeat him. His negatives are high after all of his liberal demagoguery in his presidential campaign. Who shall we get behind in this Senate race?

No, Gephardt will stay till Iowa, which he won before. If he wins it again he will have momentum. The unions are all behind him, he has cash. Braun has no reason to leave. She has no other job. This is building her speaking fees. Ditto for Sharpton. The backmarkers now are Kucinich (who also doesn't have a job) and Edwards. I think Edwards will go next.

Edwards' strategy is built around being the anti-Dean when the dust clears from Iowa and New Hampshire. He's leading the polls in South Carolina. He's in the race for keeps; he's already sworn off a senate run. He may even win, and even if he loses he's working the VP angle, which requires a strong run, not an early exit.

Gephardt is out if he loses Iowa, but he's in 'til then. Kerry MAY be out if he loses New Hampshire, but he's in at least 'til then. Clark could exit early if he keeps going on about time travel and whatnot. Lieberman's the best bet for the next exit if he keeps losing support like he has. Kucinich, I agree could hit the road, either to run for his House seat or US Senate. Braun may run out of money.

Here's my list:

1. Graham
2. Graham (for real)
3. Lieberman
4. Kucinich
5. Braun
6. Clark
7. Kerry
8. Edwards
9. Gephardt
10. Dean Wins Nomination, starts general election
11. Al Sharpton concedes Oct. 2004
