I wish I could take research credit. I read Mowry's The California Progressives back in 1967 for a college research paper. I was quite captivated by Johnson's invective, as well as by the whole Progressive revolt against the corruption of both parties in California (I'm a 5th generation Californian and was very interested in how the power of the railroad affected my family's agriculture and wine interests). The quote stuck with me and, when I picked up a copy of the book for my library years later, I marked the page with Johnson's wonderful blast at Otis and the LA Times. The parallels between the 1910 revolt and this year's recall are not insignificant.
