TOM MCCLINTOCK DAILY EDITION - 10/6/03 (CA GOVERNOR'S RACE)
Please post local, regional, national news and views on Tom McClintock. This is a news and info thread. The following guidelines for posting are per DoughtyOne's most excellent suggestion.
McClintock Camp - Supporters or Defenders
Please post positive articles about Tom's policies and leave the Schwarzenegger bashing to the Democrats.
Schwarzenegger Camp - Supporters or Defenders
The call for McClintock to withdraw right now, or the tactic of calling him and his followers names for not doing so, is not productive and isn't good for the party.
Please save the Rino Arnold/Unelectable Tom rants for other threads.
"Dear Mr. Reagan, it should be obvious to you now that you can never be elected governor. Please put aside your ego, for the good of our party, and get behind the one man who is moderate enough to appeal to California voters - - San Francisco Mayor George Christopher."

Excellent article. Below is an excerpt that doesn't discuss Arnold (as Keyes often does in the article) but give an idea of the insight Keye's has on the recall situation.
It seems that many California Republican leaders never even seriously considered the recall as an opportunity to make their real case to the people of California. As I write this, the under-funded and under-reported McClintock defeats Bustamante in head-to-head polls, with Arnold off the ballot. A vast majority in the state understands even now that Tom McClintock is the candidate most able to handle California's fiscal crisis. Californians told pollsters, by a two-to-one margin, that McClintock won the debate, that two-thirds of them also said would be crucial to their choice on Oct. 7.
California Republican leaders could have viewed this moment of opportunity through the lens of the statesman, not of the director of sitcom casting. But instead of uniting behind the obvious man of the hour, they increasingly viewed McClintock's surge as a problem, and have done their best to sabotage it.

All of the polls seem to conflict.
Knight Ridder is quoted most frequently (as of today), but some guy just called up KABC complaining that they weren't quoting the 'Knowledge Networks' poll. He went on to say the poll was a Stanford University poll conducted by the Hoover Institution.
Hoover is definitely an Arnold supporter given all his advisors. Is Arnold publishing his own polls, or does Hoover publish polls for all elections? I never paid that much attention before.

A great group showed up Saturday in Fresno for our "Walk For Tom". The McClintock campaign had delivered 4,000 flyers to us the night before. Rand Green and his cute wife showed up with several thousand copies of his article: "McClintock Can't Win? Do the Math" which we included with Tom's flyer to be distributed at precincts in Fresno and Clovis. Channel 24 TV news showed up and they did do a piece Saturday evening. It was pretty good, too. I have never been so proud to be associated with this campaign. Whatever happens, I will be sleeping well knowing I am supporting the best candidate for the job, and a candidate we can all be proud of. While the others have been slinging mud, crapping on each other and the electorate, Tom McClintock has been an example of class and professionalism. He has stayed focus and he has stayed the course. Go, McClintock! I have already voted YES on the recall and FOR McClintock.

I'm feel very, very good about it as well. This recall has opened my eyes to how desperate and corrupt the CA G.O.P. is and has made me appreciate Tom McClintock even more than I did before. He has really done an outstanding job. He has been the shining light.

Rabid, you've been outstanding, soldiering on for Tom!
wanted to mention that I almost drove off the road this
AM listening to liberal Ken and Co on 790. They did a
poll of the program crew and in the midst of lefty media radio/entertainment/hollywierd, the votes were 2 for NO on recall and FOR Bustmytaxes, and 4 for YES on recall and
all four votes for TOM!!! lots of comments that not a single vote for Arnie and Ken was taking shots at the Tom
support... I am not optimistic, but I am HOPEFUL that
the car tax and the deficit hole will outweigh the celebrity kiss up factor... but we'll see.
keep up the good work!

The Wilson Admin truely hates us at the Conservative grassroots level, the irony is how stupid so many on the Grassroots website of Conservatism, Free Republic, are still dense to that track record.

Thanks - it has been a honor! I really, really like the guy. When I got started I didn't know that much about him and was on the fence about who to vote for - but it is so crystal clear to me now.

Guess who is coming to an Jose today? Ahnie! One of his last stops.
I was almost tempted to go down and sample the crowd antics and such, but have opted to clean out my garage instead.

As the campaign comes to a close, I thought I'd sum up my feelings on McClintock's run. As many of you know, I'm one of the many "Thomas Sowell Republicans" who chose to vote for my distant 2d choice, Schwarzenegger, based on my assessment of the numbers and probabilities, with hopes for the best out of Arnold once in office.
I cannot fault McClintock for being a traitor, as some have done. He has made it clear in recent weeks, and in a radio spot (in his own voice) now airing around the state, that his supporters should "vote their conscience" on the successor portion of their recall ballots. This is both principled and a brilliant rhetorical stroke: without being duplicitous, it blesses those who choose to vote for Arnold (out of greater fears of Cruz), while assuring those who stay with Tom on the ballot that they aren't in the wrong if it should turn out that Cruz DOES narrowly win. (God forbid.)
I cannot fault Tom for bashing Arnold much. He did a little at the outset of the campaign, but said nothing negative during the debate, as many Arnold loyalists had feared. (And "fear" is the word, isn't it fair to say?, given Tom's awesome command of the details that Arnold is only now beginning to osmose.)
I do wish that Tom had made clearer, in recent days, that his PRINCIPAL reaction to the yellow journalism versus Arnold in the final days of the campaign was despicable and suspicious ... and that only as a SECONDARY matter did he believe that, if the charges were true, Arnold should bow out. The press exploited Tom over the weekend, making it seem, unfairly and inaccurately, like Tom was taking the same tack as Davis, who of course DID mean to play up the yellow trash.
Tom is a gentleman, and I wish him the best and brightest future. Most immmediately, assuming the recall succeeds and Schwarzenegger succeeds Davis, my hope is for Tom to have substantial power and/or influence in the new administration, preferably officially so. That'll take BOTH camps' setting aside their pride and hurt feelings. But here is hoping.
Take a bow, Tom.

i pray too, but i also do not believe "in cutting off my nose to spite my face". if tom can't win why vote for him and end up electing bustamante??? just look at the poles.

Here's a $64K question? Why do we never hear of Arnold's first bid to run as governor? Why did he decide to drop out? Enquiring minds want to know!
http://www.enterstageright.com/archive/articles/0501tidbits1.htm Schwarzenegger drops bid to run for governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger is opting out of the 2002 race to become California's governor, saying his film career and family have taken precedence over politics.
"I have to be selfish at this point ... and take care of those things," the 53-year-old actor told the Los Angeles Times. "The movie projects came together. ... I have to keep up my end of the deal. It's not like it could have gone this way or that."
He said that he was not abandoning the idea of running for office as a Republican, but was only postponing his plunge into politics until his four children, ages 3 to 11, are older, the Times said April 25.
The Austrian-born former bodybuilder shares moderate views on gun control and abortion rights that match those of most California voters.
Schwarzenegger, whose film credits include "Pumping Iron," "Total Recall" and "End of Days," has two film projects in the works. He said he will focus on finishing a sequel to "True Lies" and production will begin later this year on "Terminator III."
Republican Secretary of State Bill Jones already has declared his candidacy and William E. Simon Jr., a Los Angeles investment banker, also is considering seeking the GOP nomination.
Incumbent Democrat Gray Davis, who likely will seek a second term, so far faces no serious threat from within his party.
