It now appears that Tom McClintock will have the extraordinary good fortune of being merely irrelevant.

If Arnold had connected less effectively with the vast majority of relatively non-political voters who are disgusted by "politics as usual" on BOTH ends of the political spectrum, or if the Gray Davis "slime machine" had been able to find some more powerful dirt on Arnold, or if Bustamante had not been such a complete buffoon...

Tom McClintock's well-intentioned, but dreadfully misguided crusade could have cost this state an absolutely essential victory against the forces of darkness.

Perhaps Sabertooth is correct, and Tom can redeem himself by laboring successfully in the fields of the referenda, but in my humble opinion, he still requires CONSIDERABLE improvement in his team-building skills if he ever expects to be "ready for prime time" in any major statewide election.

You are so right. At the beginning of this recall it was said that Arnold and Cruz, the frontrunners, were also the two who could never win their party's primary. This recall is a fluke. In a regular election the conservative vote is essential to win. Those who wish to kick conservatives out of the Republican party should realize that they would never win an election again.
