IMHO too many people think of the process (governing) as an event (election). The election of the candidate is only the first step in the process. You need to get the guy into office who is first and foremost electable given the profile of the electorate. THEN, you have to apply constant pressure on him/her to move closer and closer to your position. If you split the vote and the "other side" gets in
no amount of pressure on your part will benefit you and your positions.
