I like that idea.
Now, just how bad did you want that driver's license?

just illegals?
Most here, with few exception's, have a problem with the criminal part. Welcome to FR!Blackbird.

I have one question do you have problems with Americans who are part Mexican who are good citizens and fight for this country or just illegals? Just the illegal ones. Most of us are not against legal immigration. After all, my woman is an immigrant, and not a US citizen either.

Escalante has proven his loyalty in his willingness to serve and die for his new country. He earned it. He deserves it and any other decision would have been wrong and a travesty. Maybe this should be a good step to "earn" ones citizenship? I'd be in favor of it.

The last I heard it is a felony for anyone to use forged or fake documents in most states, and particularly when dealing with the feds. It is extremely disturbing to know that the military is so inept that they actually allowed this criminal to enlist using false identification. What if he'd been an Al Quaeda agent? Application of most laws can and should be done in a context. In this case, I think this guy proved his loyalty to the USA by serving in the noblest of traditions. These actions outweigh the illgality of his earlier act.
I am for law and order, and I don't advocate this as public policy, but for this sitiuation, the right thing was done.

But, I have one question do you have problems with Americans who are part Mexican who are good citizens and fight for this country or just illegals? I also don't have not problem to this. Two things happened for this person to become an American soldier. He had to enter this country illegally and he had to defraud the military when he entered into service.
I wouldn't have a big problem with that under some extenuating circumstances. One would be if he entered the country as a minor child with his parents (in other words, had no choice in the matter) AND had informed the military of his status before it was discovered.
In my judgment, each such case should be handled individually and the character of the individual should play a key role in the decision. The one thing we don't want to do is to reward unethical behavior.

Hi,
I don't know where you got this list, but I'm on too many of them and spend too much time keeping track of conversations because of it.
I can see that your name is new here. No offense, but unless you are someone who was banned to whom I gave such permission, please take me off this list.
Thanks,
CO

Escalante was born in Mexico and illegally crossed into the United States as a 4-year-old with his mother. He grew up largely in Seattle, graduating from Chief Sealth High in 2002.

We welcome you here. I proudly call this man who served this great country a fellow American. You will find some strong opinions here on FR, but most of us share many of the same values. We welcome those into our country from everywhere if it is done orderly and they are coming here to become Americans. I had a grandfather come to this country from Ireland and the other from Germany. They wanted no hyphenated descriptions. They were proud to be Americans.
Our borders have been out of control for a long time, and we are paying the price. The fabric of this nation is being ripped apart and Mexico is importing poverty. It is dividing us and causing intolerable problems in California.

I have a problem with criminals and foreigners, especially illegals, (but not naturalized citizens) serving in our military. Conceivably there are missions where the hiring of foreign mercenaries might make sense.
In no way should American citizenship be up for sale.

Just speaking for myself as a never-served civilian (thanks to a collapsing lung in
high school):
When a fellow/gal is willing to assume a duty that can conceivably put them into
lethal danger for the country...it's one time when I say "what forged green card?".
It fits with a long tradition of Judeo-Christian and English law: temper justice with mercy.
And a general comment: when you hear some folks wail about the undocumented immigration,
some are in areas such as Arizona or Southern California where the influx
from Mexico (and undocumenteds from Canada, Ireland, Hungary and L-rd knows where else)
does cause financial stress to the government. Some of the complaints you hear are
understandably born of the complaint of already paying maybe 40% of their salary to taxes,
then seeing a fair amount of benefits go to undocumenteds.
And they say this even as they realize the economic mess in Mexico makes the undocumenteds
do the rational thing...head north to earn enough money to eat, and then maybe thrive.
