[CA Gov] Davis Signs Radical New Sex Ed Program
Capitol Resource Institute ^ | 02 October 2003 | Amy Koons

Governor Gray Davis, in what appears to be the final hours of his doomed administration, has today signed SB 71, the radical new sex education program. Astonishingly, Governor Davis' press release today contends that this is an issue of "women's health and reproductive rights." "SB 71 is certainly not about women's health or reproductive rights," said Karen England of Capitol Resource Institute. "Davis' statement in his press release is wholly misleading."

The Davis press release leaves many people to wonder if he is trying to send a hidden message to Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion allies that he is on their side and hopes they will aid him as he fights for his political life.

"Although SB 71 does encourage the sexual activity of minors by deleting provisions on abstinence and will thus potentially lead to more abortions, reproductive or women's rights is not the central issue of this legislation," continued England.

"In fact, SB 71 takes away a woman's right to know about things like 1) the value of abstinence, 2) the emotional and psychological consequences of adolescent pregnancy, 3) the father's financial responsibility to children born out of wedlock, and 4) how to say 'no' to unwanted sexual advances. All of these common-sense requirements were removed from the Ed Code by SB 71."

"Also, in fact, SB 71 takes away a mother's right. Parents will no longer be notified every time their children are taught sexual content, including promotion of the homosexual lifestyle, in the classroom. Parents will only be notified one time at the beginning of the school year and will be required to send a note back to the school to opt out their children from the sex education classes."

SB 71 undermines the parent's right to know when their children are studying sexuality, consent to it, and direct the study of it. SB 71 requires children from kindergarten through 12th grade to be taught that homosexuality and other "committed relationships" deserve respect and appreciation to the same degree as marriage.

What SB 71 is really about is promoting homosexual and transsexual lifestyles, eliminating parental involvement in the sex education of their children, and removing important instruction for our children from the education code.

"The passage and signing of SB 71 by Gray Davis signals a sad day for children and parents in California," said England. Although we have apparently lost the battle over SB 71, Capitol Resource Institute will not grow weary or fail in this war for the minds and hearts of our children and for parental rights. ###

Well, recalling the SOB would be a good start....But seriously, while I signed the recall petition, and will vote to recall Davis, he wouldn't be so reckless in his bill signings if he weren't facing a recall. He feels he needs to pander to his base -- severe left-wingers -- as his only hope of beating the recall. But his history over the past 5 years has been that he hasn't been this extreme in the bills he's signed, which is why a good number of lefties hate him. He has often vetoed onerous legislation, trying to keep a balance and trying to please as many people as possible. But with the recall facing him, he's decided to go hard left, or, it's simply that he despises California voters for calling the recall, and he's trying to thumb his nose at us as much as he can between now and Tuesday. Either way, the recall has driven Gray further left than he usually is.

Wait. That's more than four words, but no matter. You get my point.

It would take a governor with a veto pen, or enough intelligent voters to make a change in the state legislature.

So...what's Governor Arnold going to do about this?

Why, isn't it true as Hannity, Hewitt, and other Groper-supporters IMPLIED before the election (as they fawned over A.S.), -- that "the governor's office doesn't affect any REALLY important social issues"?

Davis signed that legislation on Dirty Thursday (October 1), under media-frenzy cover of the charges against Arnold. Now that the smoke is finally clearing from the election, people look at this law and treat it like it's old news.
