Gray Davis quid pro quo?

The owners of the Sacramento Kings professional basketball team have made a $100,000 donation to the "No on Recall" campaign of Gov. Gray Davis, just as a bill that would involve taxpayers in financing a new arena for the NBA franchise has reached the governor's desk....

Reasons to vote for McClintock: Hugh Hewitt asserts every ballot cast for Tom helps the Democrats
WorldNetDaily.com ^ | Wednesday, October 1, 2003 | Hugh Hewitt

By the time this column appears, perhaps Tom McClintock will have shut down his campaign and instructed his supporters to vote for Arnold. The CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll put an end to the always very-far-fetched notion that Tom was competitive, and not even millions in independent expenditures from the slot machines can put Tom within 10 points of winning.
But I suspect he will stay his course for reasons that will remain a subject of speculation for years to come. What matters now is not Tom's intentions, but the electorate's. Here are the implications of a vote for Tom: ....

By 56% to 42%, likely voters support ousting the Democratic incumbent.
The Republican actor is favored by 40% of likely voters, followed by Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, a Democrat, with 32%, and state Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) with 15%....

If Arnold and Tom fatally split the GOP vote, then it still looks like:
1. Bustamente
2. No Recall (Davis)
3. The rest of the field.

Is Tom McClintock the choice of true liberals?!
LA Times ^ | Sept 30, 2003 | LA Times
Posted on 10/01/2003 12:45 AM PDT by Tempest
Well the question is obviously rhetorical but let's look at some interesting data from the latest LA Times poll. And well considering how so many Tom supporters trust the LA Times I figured they might find this data quite interesting.
What is your impression of Tom Mclintock?
Favorable: 62% (likely voters) Breakdown: 39% (Dems) 88% (Rep)
Unfavorable: 25% (likely voters) Breakdown: 40% (Dems) 8%(Rep)
What is your impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger?
Favorable: 58% (likely voters) Breakdown: 30% (Dems) 89% (Rep)
Unfavorable: 39% (likely voters) Breakdown: 65% (Dems) 10%(Rep)
Should Tom McClintock stay in the race to help the Democrats split the Republican vote? (Paraphrased)
Stay in: 58% (likely voters) Breakdown: 80% (DEMORATS!!!) 36% (Rep)
Drop out: 36% (likely voters) Breakdown: 15% (Dems) 61% (REPUBLICANS!!!)

Drive to Recall Davis Sparks A Rush of Liberal Legislation

California's recall election won't be decided until next week. But one result of the unusual campaign to oust Gov. Gray Davis is already in: A raft of liberal legislation has been enacted that would be hard for any Republican administration to undo.
Democratic legislators raced to approve bills while they still had a somewhat friendly face in the governor's office. Mr. Davis, meanwhile, sought to appeal to key Democratic constituency groups in an effort to keep his job....

Tensions couldn't be higher as the two-minute warning sounds in the recall game -- and true to form, the Democrats have reacted by breaking out in a locker-room fistfight.
In a nutshell: Gov. Gray Davis' folks say their polls show Democratic "fallback" candidate Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante is toast -- and will never overcome Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger....

California: Democrats prepare post-vote challenges
Sacramento Bee ^ | October 1, 2003 | Sam Stanton and Gary Delsohn
Posted on 10/01/2003 7:05 AM PDT by John Jorsett
Setting the stage for a post-election legal challenge to the recall vote, Democrats are set to launch a national fund-raising campaign today to help pay for any legal action needed if Tuesday's election on Gov. Gray Davis' future is close. Seeking to avoid what they called "another Florida-style fiasco," the state party and a national Democratic group called Democrats for America's Future said they hope to raise $100,000 to place poll watchers around the state Tuesday and to help with post-election legal challenges that may come up.
"We're preparing for every possibility," said Peter Ragone, communications director for Davis' anti-recall campaign. "There's a lot at stake here. We want to make sure every voice is heard." ....

California: Vote tally might take till morning
San Jose Mercury News ^ | October 1, 2003 | Mark Gladstone and Mike Zapler
Posted on 10/01/2003 7:07 AM PDT by John Jorsett
SACRAMENTO - Californians may not know the outcome of the Oct. 7 recall election until they wake up the next morning, Secretary of State Kevin Shelley said Tuesday. But if Gov. Gray Davis is ousted, he is likely to remain in office until mid-November, when the vote is certified.
While voters may assume that if the recall succeeds Davis will be sent packing in a few days, Shelley cautioned that that would be a ``very unlikely scenario.''
As many as 1 million votes statewide may not be counted Election Night, but the race would have to be very close for those ballots to affect the outcome, election officials said.
By law, Shelley must certify the results within 39 days of the election, or by Nov. 15 at the latest. He added that a study of the 33 statewide elections since 1973 showed that certification takes almost 39 days to complete, and that he didn't expect it to happen any faster for the recall.
``That could go outwards to 39 days,'' Shelley said at a news conference at the Sacramento County Registrar's office. ``Nov. 15 would be that last day.'' ....

California: Hundreds of bills await Davis' signature

SACRAMENTO - With just days to go before voters decide Gray Davis' fate, the first governor in state history to face a recall holds sway over a mountain of legislation, some of which could fundamentally alter California public policy long into the future, even if he is prematurely booted from office.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) With little more than a week left in California's recall race, Arnold Schwarzenegger is trying to make his victory seem inevitable. But his more conservative Republican rival isn't going away.
State Sen. Tom McClintock has stuck firmly some say obstinately to his pledge to race to the end, even at the risk of splitting the Republican vote and allowing Democrats to stay in power even if Gov. Gray Davis is recalled....
