I my be in the minority here, but I find it very hard to believe the mother knew her daughter was left alone or would have told someone in authority.

Dollars to donuts someone else (baby sitter) dropped the kid off at the home and figured Mom would be back.

I would not be surprised if I'm wrong, though

What mom would tell a baby sitter to leave a two year old, who can obviously get about and into all sorts of dangerous mischief, alone until she (the mom) returned?

Also, don't you think mom would have tried to find out what happened to the kid if the arrangement was that the baby sitter would just leave the baby in her apartment?

Pokies have telephones and there are social services. She could have always called the father or the phantom baby sitter to find out what was happening with her kid. Or alerted the authorities.

Sorry, don't buy your excuse.
