Either McClintock or Schwarzenegger Likely Winner in California if Other Dropped Out |
With Arnold Schwarzenegger the Republican front-runner in the California gubernatorial contest, many GOP officials have pressured California State Sen. Tom McClintock to drop out of the race, fearing he will divide the Republican vote and allow Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante to win. A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted over the past weekend, shows that McClintock does indeed draw support away from Schwarzenegger, though not enough to deprive the actor of the lead among probable voters. But the poll also shows that if Schwarzenegger were not in the race, McClintock would likely be in first place by a substantial margin, rather than behind Bustamante.

We like Tom. It's many of his supporters we have doubts about. Many on these recall threads have been extreme in their tone, extreme in their words, and extreme in their attitude. Put it all together, and one has to come to the conclusion that many of them are extremists. They reflect badly on Tom. And quite frankly, these strident puritans of the rights have done their cause and their candidate more harm than they can ever imagine.

Where you aware that a recent Public Policy Poll had (R)nold being the top vote getter among Hispanics? Guess who was second? None other than ProLife Tom McClintock. BustaMEChA was, gasp, a close 3rd.
What would be the date of that PPIC poll? And do you have a link? The last one dated 9/8-17 doesn't say that.......

See, it's this kind of attack on fellow conservatives which has soured so many on the McClintock campaign. Your insults have injured Tom's chances, at least here.

I could look it up if you need, but I heard it on Michael Medved's radio program, and he is one of your biggest shills. I don't doubt him, since he still managed to repeat your mantra of Tom dropping out in the same segment...

They also supported Riordan, what's your point?
To: My2Cents
The NBC news anchor here in LA just said on Matthews that the LA Times poll coming out is going to show that Davis is dust. It also will show the McClintock is only three points behind AS, both ahead of Bustamante!
I think it is rigged to draw votes for McClintock, and further split the R vote.
To: PeoplesRep_of_LA
What issue? Neither of them are dropping out, so there's no point. Schwarzenegger leads McClintock by 22%, so why should he drop out? The candidate poised to win should bow to the candidate currently certain to lose?
I'll admit I am surprised how Bustamente has totally collapsed. However, the hypothetical poll seems more in line to serve to get some GOPers to "go home" to McClintock, thereby allowing Bustamente to slip through, and as usual, many "true conservatives" on FR are falling for this liberal trap, hook, line, and sinker. Witness the posts saying "This poll shows McClintock will win! Tell your friends and neighbors!" That's pathetic. This poll shows McClintock is 22 points behind the leader, it does NOT show he can win, unless you take the poll that shows a hypothetical matchup that does not exist.
But in any event, if these #s hold, kudos to California. I think this is great news. Maybe Bustamente will end up being in third on October 7.

Manufacturers Endorse Schwarzenegger for Governor Sacramento, CA - - Breaking an 85 year tradition, the California Manufacturers & Technology Associations Board of Directors voted today to endorse Arnold Schwarzenegger for Governor. CMTAs board recognized that Schwarzenegger is the candidate best equipped to promote a pro-jobs, pro-growth agenda; work to reduce the cost burden on employers; and halt the growth in government spending.
Since January 2001, California has lost more than 300,000 manufacturing jobs. These are the middle-income jobs that have been the backbone of Californias economy and pay an average of $55,000 per year.
The states primary focus should be getting these people back to work, said CMTA President Jack Stewart. Unfortunately, Sacramento has been preoccupied lately with a job killing agenda that has added new regulatory costs and new work place mandates on employers, resulting in additional job losses.
A recent study by the Milken Institute found that the cost of manufacturing in California is 32 percent higher than the average for the other 49 states.
California can no longer afford an annual, helter-skelter barrage of taxes, fees and regulations. It needs a focused vision that will balance the needs of the employees and employers alike. We believe Mr. Schwarzenegger has the political will and courage to make it happen, said Stewart. Californias future is at stake, its time for bold leadership and thats why the CMTA Board voted the way it did today.
Stewart noted that the business community has been the designated resource for Californias spending spree for too long and pointed specifically to skyrocketing workers compensation costs, a pending explosion in the unemployment insurance tax rate, excessive electricity rate hikes for industrial customers and an increasing tax burden.
Mr. Schwarzenegger understands the inherent need to keep families working in good, high paying jobs. Californias economy grows when our families are working and earning a fair wage. If we can provide the atmosphere to make that happen, state revenues will go up and the burden on state government will go down. Its that simple and he gets it, concluded Stewart.
CMTA did not take a position on the recall question.

This is such a bogus premise for a stupid polling question.
The race is not between Cruz and Tom. If it were, ole Tom would be getting smeared by the democrats.
Notice that Tom hasn't been the recipient of the democrat hit squad? One reason: he's not worth it --- he's not a viable competitor.
Quite the opposite: he's their useful idiot and the donations by the Indian casinos prove it.

If the 0.0000001% of California voters who inhabit the pages of FR were to vote for Tom he'd
still be at 18%.
He's got a snowball's chance in hell.

What issueThis issue is that the (R)nold Groupies screeching about voting for Tom=Bustamante was a total fraud. I think that is pretty obvious. Now (R)nold should be able to win with Tom still in the race. I think that could be a win-win. There is a whole lotta I Told You Sos in that...
However, the hypothetical poll seems more in line to serve to get some GOPers to "go home" to McClintock,
Time out, I know you are having fun repeating the new mantra on here already, the "hook line and sinker" BS, but tell me, how can a poll lie that McClintock could beat Busta, that (R)nold can beat Busta with Tom still in, then not lie when it says that (R)nold will win? I just don't understand how you people can so obviously contradict yourselves for what you want...
But in any event, if these #s hold, kudos to California. I think this is great news. Maybe Bustamente will end up being in third on October 7.
I agree totally, and believe me there is going to be HELL TO PAY if he does finish in 2nd to all the KNOW IT ALLS WHO SAID WE HAD TO VOTE FOR (R)NOLD WITHIN THE GOP. You don't even wanna be within shouting distance when your (R)nold "the body Ventura" Schwarzenegger raises taxes and causes the CA economy to collapse just like Pete Wilson did. Talk Radio and FR will never be the same if that plays out. That is the travesty, we Californians still have the opportunity to stop that fracture, that distrust...

IF MC CLINTOCK DOES JUST AS WELL AGAINST BUSTAMANTE IN THE POLLS He's not, though...
But beyond that, do you all have those ads up yet ("Another shade of Gray" -- those are great. I downloaded one and saved it on the computer)? Bustamente coming in third would be absolutely thrilling. Do you think McClintock would consider running against Boxer? If Bustamente is decimated the momentum would be huge for the GOP to oust her, and apparently McClintock's positive ratings have blossomed and his name ID is high, according to this latest poll. It would be bad for Dem presidential candidate if they have to be distracted by even having to defend that Senate seat. This is looking great, if the momentum keeps up. If California were to start trending back to the GOP it would be phenomenal.

Schwarzenegger...has virtually every conservative endorsement in the state...Wrong! Schwarzenegger has virtually every REPUBLICAN Party Hack endorsement in the state. That's a HUGE difference. Most CA Republican "leaders" are not interested in conservative values. In fact, I'd wager that most of them are not interested in any values whatsoever. It's all about power and money for them. McClintock, who won't compromise his principles, won't play their game which is why the CA Republican Party is against him. They'd still be against him even if Arnold's poll numbers were in the toilet.

So many people have swallowed the liberal pablum that says Tom can't win. So why are more liberals pulling for McC than they are for Arnold?
To: ScottinSacto
I do read it and it's basically an advice column to the Team Arnold consultants on how to avoid screwing up the race. Arnold needs to do this, or Arnold should stop doing that -- pretty obvious he's trying to help his favorite candidate. He's a columnist and that is his right, but he's clearly biased and to claim otherwise is absurd.
And yes, they would crucify McClintock in a normal election but this is not a normal election. While their guns are trained on Arnie we can elect ourselves a true blue conservative.
