Operating under the delusion that alienating Constitution-believingconservatives is a good electoral strategy for them, HouseRepublicans are pushing a new $200 million program to forcetaxpayers to make housing down payments for 40,000 low-incomehombuyers.
This money will not be a loan, but a grant.The vote on that legislation, H.R. 1276 will occur tomorrow,Wednesday, October 1, at 10:00 a.m.As actual taxpayers know, lenders require a downpayment to ensurethat the buyer has the fiscal discipline, the resources, and thewillingness to continue to make payments month after month.
IfH.R. 1276 is passed, the result will be that, a year from now,40,000 defaulting purchasers will return to the taxpayers -- to youand me -- in the expectation that we will also pick up their monthlypayments.
Why not?In the bleak panoply of federal programs, few programs have beenmore dismal failures than federal housing subsidies.
Studies haveconsistently shown that it would have been cheaper for the taxpayerto pay the rent for the "beneficiaries" of federal housing giveaways.H.R. 1276 is a failure waiting to happen;
a pre-ordained disastercrafted by congressmen who have learned nothing from the drearyhistory of federal housing subsidy programs.Read the H.R. 1276 sales pitch and you will easily see the politicsbehind this legislation.
Tomorrow morning, your wallet andprinciples will be exchanged for votes in the next election.
Pleasecontact your U.S. representative now to ask him to vote "NO" onH.R. 1276 when it comes up tomorrow morning.Contact Your U.S.

I'm not kidding either. I can't afford health insurance, also something many "poor" have handed to them for nothing.
BTW, I believe this was GWBs bright socialist ideas. I'm getting entirely sick and tired of paying for everyone's bright ideas.
More helicopter money to keep the economic recovery illusion alive. Housing is all that is keeping the economy from just falling over dead in its tracks. Of course the government is going to be buying houses for people. The clown patrol wants to get re-elected no matter how much it costs taxpayers later.

I don't see why being poor should mark you for any special favoratism when there are gay, one armed, honduran poets who need Uncle Sam to give them a house, too.
Yeah, but being a south of the border, uniclubbed, versesmith puts you over the top. And I know over the top.

That being said, we already have many programs to help with housing, both publically funded through USDA and HUD as well as private organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. I'd be interrested in knowing what legitimate reason the proposers of this legislation had for it. I understand politics and votes were the justification of their excuses.
