WASHINGTON -- In Scott Stevens' assessment, President Bush would likely be a centerman if he played ice hockey. President Clinton, on the other, would be better as a defenseman.

Stevens, the Devils captain, made the remarks yesterday outside the White House, where the team was recognized by Bush for skating to its third Stanley Cup championship in the past nine years.

Hope this is ok to post in it's entirety. The article doesn't really mention it, but word here in NJ was that the Devils didn't really want to personally visit Clinton in 2000. Don't know if that's true but that is what many folks said at the time.

One of the NJ Devils recently bought a house in my little town, and over this past summer I (along with about 100 people that night) got the drink beer out of the Stanley Cup!!!!

As I recall, several of the players did not make the trip to see the slick one.

I also have the impression that Stevens is a good Republican. He must be pretty persuasive if he got Brodeur, a French Canadian, to tow the line.

Do we see a Senator Stevens in the future?

"As the players moved as one toward the presidential workspace, Bush turned again to offer one more bit of hospitality: "And bring your wives."

LOL ... I'll bet they were told that the last time they visited too!

On another note ... given Martin Brodeur's "off ice activities" I would have bet he were a fan of that ... "other" President.

I saw the news clip on the New Jersey news channel last night. They showed the President holding up the "Bush #1 jersey" they presented to him. They all seemed thrilled to get in the picture with GW.

I remember reading an article about Bobby Holik a few years ago when he still played for the Devils. It was really moving, how he spoke with such affection for the United States and how grateful and proud he was to be playing in this country. Coming from a kid who grew up in a former Eastern block country, it really hit home how much freedom means and how we as natural born Americans take it for granted sometimes.

Bobby Holik is conservative. There has been even talk of him entering politics. I think he said it himself once before.

I heard a rumor that the Stanley Cup is worn right underneath the Stanley Jock Strap. :-)

It was more of a sip than a chug :)

The funniest thing is that of all of the posts I have done here on Free Republic, which I of course think are outstandingly intelligant, this is the one that will probably gain me the most respect.

"Do we see a Senator Stevens in the future?"

Did Stevens get his citizenship? He was born in Ontario.
