Novak: Wilson's Wife Not a Covert CIA Agent

The wife of Bush-bashing former U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Joe Wilson is apparently not a covert CIA operative or an undercover agent, though she's been described that way repeatedly since the CIA asked for an investigation on how her identity was made public.

According to columnist Robert Novak, who revealed Mrs. Wilson's name in his July 14 column, sources at the CIA expressly told him she was not a spy.

"According to a confidential source at the CIA, Mrs. Wilson was an analyst, not a spy, not a covert operative, and not in charge of undercover operatives," Novak told his audience on CNN's "Crossfire."

"So what is the fuss about?" he asked, then wondered aloud, "Pure Bush-bashing?"

In fact, in a little-noticed line in the initial Washington Post report on the announcement of the CIA's request for an investigation, the paper noted that "the CIA has declined to confirm whether she was undercover."

Still, hours after Novak went public with a clarification of Mrs. Wilson's status, she was described as a "undercover agent" by former White House chief of staff David Gergen in an interview with Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren, and as a "covert agent" by MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

Just pick one ... the Libertarian Party candidate, the Constitution party candidate, Pat, Alan, or some " new messiah ", whom the fringers will claim as THE exemplar of Conservatism. The vast majority of Tom's shrillest supporters here, as we all know, have been and ARE still no supporters of President Bush the younger.

I suspect the real story here, is that Plame was working the country desk, and was responsible for the "nationwide search" that sent her hubby on his fact-not-finding mission.

I guess being out of power for the first time since 1932 tends to derange the mind.

I think this is a big part of it. I've followed politics very closely since 1980, after I turned 12. I never, ever imagined the House would be surely in Republican hands in my lifetime. If I thought that, what did the typical Dem officeholder expect?

In the House, for example, redistricting in Texas and other developments make a 235-200 spread in the house very realistic. That's incredible - the Dems had the House sealed up for over 40 years, now it's our turn to have it at least that long, if not longer.

This is a crackup, plain and simple. They are very used to being in power. They have great difficulty coping with being out of power. Republicans, on the other hand, in the legislative area, seem to have a difficult time coping with having power. It's been 9 years in the House and they still don't have the hang of it.

smoothsailing: The site hasn't been pulled. I guess the Wilson's don't share your concern.
The Wilson bio site was also down when I tried it before while reading your original post. I had the correct web address since I bookmarked it. I just clicked it again and it is back up. But the children's names and the city they live in have been removed, for opposite reasons. Perhaps that is why it was temporarily down. I can never understand people harassing the kids of people they hate. It seems so cowardly.

I didn't know they were being harassed.I don't condone that as it relates to the Wilson's anymore than I condoned it as it related to Kathleen Willey. What is your source for the "police protection"?

Bret Hume discussed this on tonight's Fox News Report.....Beers is a registered DemocRAT who has gone to work for Kerry's Campaign. Also Hume mentioned that Beers had to retract some statement he had made previously but I missed the details of what it was about.

Just a slight 'slip.' He testified FALSELY before a Congressional hearing last year and had to RETRACT his statement when he got caught.

And I really hope someone gets Ms. Plame on the record on whether she was a source for any of the media on the yellowcake stories...

The Dems should really be careful what they wish for in terms of an investigation...
