Novak: Wilson's Wife Not a Covert CIA Agent

The wife of Bush-bashing former U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Joe Wilson is apparently not a covert CIA operative or an undercover agent, though she's been described that way repeatedly since the CIA asked for an investigation on how her identity was made public.

According to columnist Robert Novak, who revealed Mrs. Wilson's name in his July 14 column, sources at the CIA expressly told him she was not a spy.

"According to a confidential source at the CIA, Mrs. Wilson was an analyst, not a spy, not a covert operative, and not in charge of undercover operatives," Novak told his audience on CNN's "Crossfire."

"So what is the fuss about?" he asked, then wondered aloud, "Pure Bush-bashing?"

In fact, in a little-noticed line in the initial Washington Post report on the announcement of the CIA's request for an investigation, the paper noted that "the CIA has declined to confirm whether she was undercover."

Still, hours after Novak went public with a clarification of Mrs. Wilson's status, she was described as a "undercover agent" by former White House chief of staff David Gergen in an interview with Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren, and as a "covert agent" by MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

Also, what I find odd is that amid Joe's media junket today, his wife is MIA.

Obviously, the patriotic couple has thoroughly planned this whole intervention for the nation's benefit. He said he is doing this for the country. He wants to clear this all up.

THEN WHY THE HELL IS HIS WIFE NOT TALKING TO ANYONE ABOUT HER STATUS IN THE CIA, upon which this whole crusade is based? Why didn't the WP call her and ask her directly what her status with CIA is? She must have been at his side while he planned this junket. They do not even say, "XX was called but was unavailable for comment."

The site was apparently pulled down today, because it gave the names of their children and the city they lived in. They have been placed under a police watch. As when FOX gave the home number of the Oklahoma judge and Tucker Carlson, all three incidents have led to non-stop death threats to families of the people affected. We forget sometimes that controversial people in the news sometimes have children who shouldn't be terrorized because their parents. But the bio was reprinted in some U.S. newspapers today. His wife wasn't "outed" on the site. I have looked at it twice in the last week, including this morning. His bio merely included her name as well as the names of their children, no CIA affiliation.

Meanwhile, however you feel about Novak, you need to be aware that he is spinning this story wildly as he becomes more of the target. He unfortunately has quite a paper trail and thousands of TV apperances and interviews, so he can't walk away from some of his statements where he spoke in detail about the leak. This one is especially troublesome, from the newspaper, Newsday, on July 22, eight days after his original column. It is almost opposite of the spin he gave today while appearing to defend the president:

Novak, in an interview, said his sources had come to him with the information. "I didn't dig it out, it was given to me," he said. "They thought it was significant, they gave me the name and I used it."

The reporter apparently has the tape recording. This will not help the case of either Novak or the White House.

I remember a technique Clinton used to use. When a scandal broke that Clinton knew couldn't really touch him he would act like he had something to hide. The Pubbies would demand documents and Clinton would claim executive privilege. He would fight it all the way to the top of the courts and when the judge agreed that Clinton did not have to turn over any documents, Clinton would release the evidence that showed he was, for lack of a better word, innocent.

Then when a scandal that had legs showed up Clinton could point to the unfounded allegations of the evil Republicans.

Doesn't this story come from the infamous 16 words in a State of the Union Speech? Dubya and Condi broke that scandal.

Maybe there is something there, and ironically Dubya may be the cause of his own downfall...but I doubt it. I've watched Dubya pull the strings of the media and the 'rats for too long to misunderestimate him.

1) The site is there. It appears smoothsailing just mistyped the URL the first time.

2) Where have you heard or read that Wilson is now under a police watch?

3) I don't know anything about the Oklahoma judge story (what judge?), but have you actually heard or read anything about Tucker Carlson getting DEATH THREATS? I know he certainly got a boatload of phone calls, many of which were probably nasty (though he asked for it), but I haven't seen anyone report that he was getting death threats.
