Wasn't that Gimli's horse he hopped onto? Legolas & Gimli typically rode together. Helluva stunt in any case.

So when Return of the King comes out, that is it? That is the end? No Simarillion movie? No Hobbit movie? Is this the end of Tolkien?

What if some composer was to do an opera version of LOTR? Sort of like the Ring Cycle by Wagner, only on a larger scale.

It could have been Gimli since I was paying more attention to Legolas than the rider. Isn't Gimli the short, stocky troll guy with an axe? If so, then it wasn't him on the horse in that scene. I think it was Aragorn (thanks for the spelling correction, 4mycountry).

Viewed the trailer on a high-speed ethernet connection at work.........

Excellent! I can't wait! I've read the books nearly 15 times over the years.

Jackson, however, excluded a number of entire CHAPTERS from TTT. I have no idea how he's going to complete the entire ROTK, all the way to the end (ie. the 4 Hobbits going back to The Shire, throwing out the Saruman and Wormtongue, and Frodo's 'passing into the West').....AND include the missing materal from the TTT. This should be a 4 or 5 hour movie, shouldn't it?

"Isn't Gimli the short, stocky troll guy with an axe?"

LOL, Gimli's a dwarf. He'd probably cleave you in two with that ax for that comment. :)

Right! lol...he probably would. I can't help thinking of him as a troll. Reminds me of a troll doll with all that hair.

Remember the scene in Moria where Aragorn wanted to help Gimli across the chasm created by a falling bridge? Gimli didn't want Aragorn to 'toss' him. Cute, but not part of the original text, obviously.

Remember the scene in Moria where Aragorn wanted to help Gimli across the chasm created by a falling bridge? Gimli didn't want Aragorn to 'toss' him.

Then in the scene in TTT at the battle of Helm's Deep, Gimli tells Aragorn he can't jump the distance to the causeway, "you'll have to toss me!"

Oh yeah, I remember that scene. But I thought Gimli told Aragorn to toss him across. A funny scene anyway! There's so much to see in these movies that it will take me many viewings to see it all. It's been 30 years since I read the books so my memory is a bit faded now.

I loved the scene when the elfen troops showed up to join the fight. I was celebrating...yes! The elves are in!

Oh thanks for the reminder. I was confusing the 2 scenes.

"it will be kind of sad because it is the end of a journey."

I take comfort in the possibility that a real Dungeons and Dragons movie will be made someday, set in the Forgotten Realms, like the Pool of Radiance. I'd make it myself if I had the money and talent like Spielberg.

'Remember the first book? How Legolas was always so moody?'

LOL--yes! If I hadn't already seen the movie and liked Legolas already, he probably wouldn't have passed muster with me in the book.

Jackson said in an interview way back when FOTR first came out that the whole Scouring of the Shire bit was not filmed, it was too much to include and too much of a downer after the end of the war of the ring. Frodo passing into the west still is in there however.

If I was doing it, I might do the same thing, but jump ahead in time to the night before Sam leaves Middle Earth, he could be reading the story to his grandkids, and close the book early telling them that they will have to read the rest themselves, he doesn't have the heart to read it to them. Then he says his goodbyes and sails off to rejoin Frodo.

I just looked at the trailer. Intense. Thanks for posting it.

Deep down inside me a little seed of hope is starting to grow that maybe, just maybe Jackson understood what he read.

It provides great insight into the world Tolkien created and explains the divine origins of Gandalf, Sauruman and Sauron, the elves, and more.

I love the Inklings. Tolkein was, perhaps the most gifted of that very gifted bunch.

I really enjoyed the FR thread Deconstructing Rowling back in June talking about the possible Inkling/Christian link between the Harry Potter books and Tolkein's Inkling traditions.  It turned me on to several authors I wasn't familiar with and an entire sub genre of religious story telling that I've really enjoyed.  I knew about and enjoyed CS Lewis and Tolkein, but I've discovered several others as well.  It has also made me look at Harry Potter more closely.  I enjoyed it as pure fantasy.  To think that she might be following in the Inklings tradition has given me new things to think about.

I've also wondered how interesting it was that Peter Jackson should choose to produce a true (in spirit) version of Tolkein's great Christian epic just now.  The originals were inspired and framed by the growing evil forces of Nazism and related threats to human existence.  Isn't it a bit coincidental that the story resurfaces today, and tells the story it tells so well?  I wonder if there will be a new generation who "get it?"

Here's the broadband version of the ROTK trailer ready for download to your PCs.

Three rars totalling ~28.5 MB, you'll need WinRAR to join them:

part1.rar

part2.rar

part3.rar

Fast ftp, capable of ~300 mB if you've got the juice. UNIX box / hidden files / case-sensitive path & fiename / shelf life of ~24 hours from now.

Enjoy!

I'm gonna be kind of sad when this finally comes out, it'll mark the end of an era, the closing of a chapter.

Sort of. But I can't wait for the Extended DVD of "Return of The King" to come out. I'll then have all 3 and my family and I have plans to start one Saturday in mid to late 2004 by viewing all 3 in succession . A whole day of LOTR on the home theatre. What a spectacular that will be.

Chances are they won't wait so long for the director's cut of ROTK. The timing of the cuts for LOTR & TTT were probably timed for added marketing oompf.
