Father gets life for 'honour' killing
A Kurdish Muslim who killed his 16-year-old daughter because she'd become "too westernised" has become the first person to be jailed for a so-called honour killing.
Abdalla Yones, 48, stabbed Heshu Yones 11 times, slitting her throat, before making a failed attempt to kill himself, and pleading with a judge to sentence him to death.
Popular and fun-loving, Heshu had planned to run away from home after starting a relationship with an 18-year-old Lebanese Christian boy.
Yones, a political refugee who had fled Iraq 10 years ago, cut his own throat and jumped from a third floor balcony after attacking Heshu at their home in Acton, west London, on Oct 12 last year.
He later tried to blame unknown Islamic men for his daughter's death, claiming he had also been attacked.
His counsel, Icah Peart QC, said that Yones now desired to die. Judge Neil Denison told him: "It is plain you strongly and genuinely disapproved of the lifestyle in this country of your daughter.
"But having said that, the killing and the manner of it was, as you have recognised, an appalling act. That is why immediately after and then again last month, you tried to take your own life. I accept that is still your intention."
Heshu's body was found in the bloodstained bathroom. A white-handled kitchen knife protruded from her neck. It was bent out of shape and the pointed tip was missing. It had broken off on contact with bone.
Yones kept a strict eye on his daughter's movements but she persuaded friends to tell lies for her, the court heard.
Judge Denison said: "This is, on any view, a tragic story arising out of irreconcilable cultural differences between traditional Kurdish values and the values of western society."
Det Insp Brent Hyatt, of the Metropolitan Police's Serious Crime Directorate, said: "I have never worked on a case that has affected me and my team so much. Heshu was a bright, vibrant, girl, full of life and humour. There was nothing, nothing at all honourable about her murder.
"After hacking his daughter to death, Mr Yones has attempted every defence, from psychiatric and diminished responsibility to extreme provocation, in order to save his own skin. As with every bullying perpetrator of domestic violence I have ever dealt with, Mr Yones turned out to be quite the coward."
Cdr Andy Baker, head of the Met's Serious Crime Directorate, said: "Violence in the name of culture will not be tolerated. Murder in the name of honour will be punished by the severest penalties available in law.
"The haunting video images of Heshu Yones put a face to a crime that has, for too long, been shrouded and obscured by fear of cultural reprimand."
He said to victims: "We have officers trained to deal with you. We are aware of the pressures you face, and will not approach your family or your community leaders unless you specifically request it." "
