Let it be said that the charge against McC that he threatened Arnie's rightful ascension to governor is now moot.
It can also be said that McClintock had a chance to enhance his standing in the party, and thereby further the advancement the conservative agenda, by being a team player. He would have made a great candidate against Boxer, with Bush, Guiliani, Cheney, Arnold etc. campaigning with him and raising funds. But he didn't want to play that game.
