I work with a number of EEs, and I know none who make that much money. The EEs at my company make the same salary as MEs at the same paygrade. Incidentally, we haven't hired a new EE in 2 years, all the recent entry level engineering slots were allocated to MEs.

I loathed my one required electrical engineering class...I'm happy as a mechanical engineer, although on average I make slightly less than an EE with the same education and work experience.

There are EE's and other engineers that do earn that much money and they are the ones that respond to the surveys. They belong in the top 10 percentile. I have found the NSPE salary surveys to be more accurate in this regard.

One thing is for sure. If you live in Silicon Valley on $89k your're sleeping in your car. $89k wouldn't cover rent and food.
