Census reports poverty rate up, median income down for second straight year

Poverty rose and income levels declined in 2002 for the second straight year as the nation's economy continued struggling after the first recession in a decade, the Census Bureau reported Friday.

The poverty rate was 12.1 percent last year, up from 11.7 percent in 2001. Nearly 34.6 million people lived in poverty, about 1.7 million more than the previous year.

That's because illegal immigration is way up.

Mexico is $12 billion richer. China seems to be doing well. I am not sure how much all the other countries are making off American prosperity but I'll bet it is plenty.

American prosperity is going across the borders and we are stuck with the welfare bills.

It's very interesting how well those numbers correlate with immigration rates. Obviously if you allow 1 million impoverished uneducated people into the country and at the same time send out 1 million jobs to China, you'll have 1.7 million more people living in poverty.

Some immigrants are okay, there might be a rare individual who has brought something special ---- but I don't think a single large immigration wave ever benefitted this country in any way. This country was best as it was originally set up when people agreed with and supported the Constitution. Ideas brought in from other countries that changed that have not been good.

Mexico is of course a very wealthy country ---- one of the top 9 economies of the world but only a handful of elites got $12 billion richer ---- the majority are worse off than before.

Well, unless you are a "Native American" then you are an immigrant..right? Or, perhaps you mean since the founding of our country? Well even if that is what is meant I would beg differ with you. The Irish and the Italians contributed quite a bit to this country as did German immigrants, Polish, Russian, Greeks, Latin Americans, Jewish, Scandinavian (my ancestors)...lots of people. I would agree with you if you mean those who do not become citizens are a real problem, this is certainly the case.

What did they bring from their native countries that improved anything that was already here? At best immigration is neutral --- if the immigrant becomes an American, picks up American ideals, learns American ways --- leaves their old culture behind. I think many large immigrant waves brought more problems ---- the Irish as a group contributed to election corruption ---- Boston, Chicago etc that outweighed any positive contributions as a group. As groups, there is no positive contribution --- as individuals sometimes.
