A judge Wednesday asked Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante to prove that his campaign is contractually obligated to continue paying for television ads bought with campaign donations that the judge earlier this week ruled illegal.
Bustamante is not disputing Judge Loren E. McMaster's finding that the $3.8 million from five public-employee unions and three casino-owning Indian tribes violates California's campaign-contribution laws, but he says the campaign can't get the money back from television stations. The campaign contends that $2.2 million worth of commercials already had run by the time McMaster issued his ruling Monday and that an additional $2 million was sent to stations late last week for this week's commercials -- money the campaign can't get back.

"Sorry Judge. The money's already been spent."
How convenient.

The stations are paid and cannot get refunds? Order the stations to run ads for Republicans in those slots.

Instead of so many here blasting Arnold, there needs to be some attention focused on Bozomonte.
We worked really hard for a Recall - even before we knew who the candidates would be.
We should be keeping our eye on that goal. Anyone who can't keep that focus, is a disruptor, IMHO.
Cheers, CC :)

Re#4 LOL. Can't do that, but Arnie's people should say "we'll fill those spots". ;^)

Didn't we already establish that, contracts or no contracts, the media generally works with clients in situations like this to cancel the ads. I seem to remember a few choice quotes in an earlier article.
Believe it or not, I have some sympathy for Bustamante, who has nothing at all without that Indian money. Why didn't the tribes' members make personal contributions to him instead?
I wonder how much ads are going to influence the public in this election. It seems to me there's more than enough coverage and people are definitely watching, so ads shouldn't have that much impact compared to typical elections.
If most realize Bustamante is a bear of very little brain(*), all the ads in the world won't save the guy.
Can you believe he still doesn't have video of his commercials on his web site? He just has text. Commercial haiku. Like this:
CMB: Arnold doesnt share our values. He wont fight for our health care, our neighborhoods, our jobs. He doesnt live in our world. He lives on Planet Hollywood. There is a long list of candidates. Finding my name wont be easy. But I need you to do it because I need your vote for Governor.
VO:
Cruz Bustamante. Democrat for Governor.
You know, if these commercials are what he thinks will make him win, let him run all of them he wants. They are awful and won't convince anyone.
D
(*) Believe it or not, this was an insult used by the European mainstream against Bush. But it's so perfect against Bustamante I've borrowed it.
PS to ChenyChick: I got my Dual G5! I got my Dual G5! (Hopping up and down) :-)

Have you seen the ad with Bustamante talking about Prop 54? They've inserted "canned applause" throughout the commercial...even in inappropriate places! BustaMEChA: Prop 54 will cut access to important data that will cure heart disease and cancer .

Have you seen (or have a link to) his ads that are yes on Bustamante, no on Proposition 54?
Those are the ones the controversial money is supposed to be supporting, it would be nice to see what they're like.
