Bruce Herschensohn, the conservative GOP nominee for Senate who lost to Democrat Barbara Boxer in 1992, is backing McClintock and said he knows there is a risk to that position. "I'll vote for the person I agree with most," Herschensohn said. Otherwise, "my conscience would bother me tremendously. I can't do it."
Dick Mountjoy, past president of the California Republican Assembly, a conservative organization that has endorsed McClintock, said McClintock has taken clear-cut conservative stands on the issues.
"You take a look at Tom, Tom has a very strong `no' on taxes. Schwarzenegger says `no, but maybe.'

McClintock wins the debate and he is supposed to quit. What a bunch of idiots.

There's a clear double standard when it comes to compromise, at least insofar as the RINOs are concerned.Always.

"Tom made a promise to me that he, in fact, wouldn't be a spoiler," Mr. Issa said. "So the pressure is on Tom to decide whether that has become the reality, that he might be becoming a spoiler." Will you keep your promise Tom?

McClintock supporters are most unlikely to go to Bustamante, but a substantial fraction would go to Arnold.
Certainly not me or ANY of the Republicans I personally know. Hell, I talked to several DEMOCRATS today who were so impressed with McClintock's performance (very "statesmanlike" was one quote) that they were going to vote for him over Bustanutty.
If McClintock drops out, I'll be voting against the recall. I signed that petition in the hope that we'd get a governor willing to support conservative principles, willing to combat the illegal immigrants flooding our state, and willing to scale back the government programs that are sucking away our tax dollars. Arnold does NONE of those, and he will not get my vote.

Okay this could be flame time.
I'm voting for Arnold. I like him and I think he will do a good job for California.
McClintock has been in California politics for 30 years and has nothing to show for it except that he hasn't voted for a budget for the last 20 years.
Tom has no idea of compromise. No idea of working with others.
It's always just his way or forget it.
He will never be able to pass a program he wants because he has no friends. He is a loner and proud of it.
Scary to me.
If he wins the election he will not get anything done. The entire legislature is dominated by democrats.
Promises are great but if you can't deliver then what good is it?

It seems to me that most Arnold supporters understand that McClintock embraces the same conservative values that they do, and they understand that McClintock is (obviously) the far more qualified candidate. However.....
The Arnold supporters are an extremely desperate crew at this point. Since Arnold's celebrity gives him an opportunity to win, they view Arnold as a convenient tourniquet - - that is, he is the nearest rag they can find to stop the bleeding.
Normally, once you stop the bleeding you then get the victim to an experienced doctor for the real mending. I have yet to read one Arnold supporter say what comes after Arnold stops the bleeding. What's the plan?

"THEY" who ran the independent to cause the defeat of Ollie North was none other than the "Honorable" John Warner. At the GOP Victory party in Fairfax County on election night 94, when GOP took both House and Senate, even tho Ollie DID lose, Warner was roundly boo'd. Couldn't have happened to a better guy.

(I wonder if Tom McClintock will have to "make a reservation" to pay back that money?)
To: ambrose
I don't have a principled answer to that question. I think that (what you call) "RINOs" could and should vote for the more conservative candidate at times too. But when it's 11 days 'til the election, nothing terribly new is likely to come out, all the positions are known,
and one of the two candidates has double the support of the other,
the party should get behind the leader, IMO. Too bad there's not a primary here. Then we (on FR, anyway) could all get behind McClintock.

Tom has no idea of compromise. Arnold has no idea of compromise. You don't sell out before you sit down at the negotiating table.

If *if* Tom were to drop out, don't you at least agree it better that he wait until the very last moment possible to do so? Insurance against any last sleaze bombs against Arnold.

Let's see, Arnold won't show up at debates, gets stomped even when he does, in spite of scripted questions, and Tom is supposed to quit? What's wrong with this picture?

You're right a true conservative would withdrawl from the race and let the real conservative with a chance of winning the election do so. But Schwartnegger isn't a conservative....
To: Desecrated
And, let's see the Schwartnegger supporters whine if he gets in and starts governing like Michael Bloomberg or Christie Todd Whitman.
To: Not gonna take it anymore
And, if Arnold gets elected and you get a Republican governor passing left-wing legislation?
