The U.S.ENGLISH Foundation is a nonpartisan, Washington, D.C.-based 501 (c)(3) educational foundation that disseminates information on English teaching methods, sponsors educational programs, develops English instructional materials, represents the interests of Official English advocates before state and federal courts and promotes opportunities for people living in the United States to learn English.
The U.S.ENGLISH Foundation contends that learning English quickly and learning it with English-speaking peers is the best way for English learners to get ahead academically and socially. Although English learners do require special language assistance, it is the Foundation's stance that this assistance should be short-term and transitional.
Recent studies show that English comprehension and literacy are two of the most important factors in determining economic independence, yet unfortunately, the opportunities to learn English are limited, and with long waiting lines. Perhaps at no other time in our nation's history has this need been so great.
It is the goal of the U.S.ENGLISH Foundation to ensure that English continues to serve as an integrating force among our nation's many ethnic groups and remains a vehicle of opportunity for new Americans.

I was trying to find articles about it, but all I could find were articles where some complain about Arnold's ties to US English.
Here is an excerpt from one with some factual info:
""Arnold Schwarzenegger is on our board of advisers," Lubinskas said on Monday. "He joined in 1987. He was invited to join. He supports official English and he supports U.S. English as an organization."
Lubinskas also said Schwarzenegger has donated money to the organization over the years, but could not say how much."

AGain, there is a clear choice: Arnold, an immigrant, who promotes that all immigrants should learn English, or Bustamante, who probably would like to make Spanish CA's official language.

Incidentally, this was one of the things that solidly put me behind Arnold.
I'm for making all immigrants learn English, and I put my theory into practice.
I use my fluency in Spanish to teach immigrants in an ESL program from South America how to speak English.

Good. US English is a group we should all support. Immigrants, including my own ancestors, had to learn English when they came across the ocean to succeed. The fact that we spend so govt money catering to those who come here as opposed to vice versa is abhorrent to me. It may be harsh, but its reality.
To: republicanwizard
Immigrants who learn English ASAP, are always more successful, than those who refuse to do so.
I've know some parents of friends, who came to the US when they were in their sixties and seventies and learned English quite well, enough to even pass the US citizenship exam.
At the same time it's sad to see a lot of young people coming here from Mexico who "no skeeke Ingles".
I vaguely remember there was a referendum about bi-lingual education and even Hispanics preferred education in English.
I think again the Democrats are promoting the non-English, to keep a permanent underclass as a voting block for themselves.

Ironic... kinda like putting Bill Clinton on the board of Interns.

I guess these were the kinds of things that are hidden in Arnolds background that we were supposed to be so scared of....

Liberals always portray themselves as educational experts, but anyone with a half a french fry in their Happy Meal knows you cannot learn English by being taught in Spanish. Only by repetitive exposure to the language does it become second nature. It's very hard at first. Hell, I'm in college and I still struggle to understand some speakers of Spanish. However, I'm learning.
Those who oppose English education for immigrants are either cruel demagogues or stupid nimrods.

This is a totally inappropriate comment to this situation, totally inapplicable and silly.
US English promotes English as official language of US and promotes that all immigrants should learn English.
Arnold believes in this and is a shining example of the concept.
You just can't get over your hate for Arnold, can you?
To: republicanwizard
Well, I have a 4.0 GPA and am regarded as an overachiever, and look at me!
"anyone with a half a french fry in their Happy Meal!"
anyone, singular, their, plural.
DOH!
To: FairOpinion
Arnold said himself, "I support da use of good English. Dis is someting very impotant. Immigrants can make more money, get ahead and all dose tings."

I think that political correctness gave rise to this grammatically incorrect statement.
If you just say, anyone ... in his... , someone is going to complain that you are sexist, so, to avoid that, end up with "their". I've seen it quite often.
To: Rennes Templar
Well, I rather have someone speak English with an Austrian accent, than someone NOT speak English and expect me to speak Spanish in the US.
To: FairOpinion
I know, and usually when I hear it, my ears hurt. I wish my eyes hurt when I do it.

Immigrants want to be part of America. Illegal immigrants just want jobs and to remain either Mexican or Canadian (the two largest groups). Immigrants came out in large numbers to support Prop 187, illegal immigrants were the ones on the streets protesting.

Thats one of the most assinine things I have ever read on FR, from a freeper. The analogy is completely wrong on two counts.. you figure it out.

However, the fact remains that I am much more comfortable with your, and Tom McClintock's characterization of the illegal alien issue than I am with Pat Buchanan's.
It just proves that conservatives do not have to resort to demagogues to get a point across.
WHY I SUPPORT ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER AND GEORGE W. BUSH!

Doofus. In fact, note that about half of the board members, by name, or my knowledge of their bio, are immigrants, or one generation removed : Mujica, olmedo, podhoretz, yallow, etc, etc.

Arnold said himself, "I support da use of good English. Dis is someting very impotant. Immigrants can make more money, get ahead and all dose tings." Better than a lot of native English speakers I've heard.
