I saw a special on that before -- it was pretty interesting to see the animation of the lake moving into the treeline over time as it gets pushed upwards.

The 2119 UTC earthquake is very interesting.
I wonder if it is a close one to the sensor (and 5.0) or is a aftershock higher.

Most of the US is on one plate. Some of us in California are on another one. Those midwestern reads are probably from the Japan quake itself.

Not an error.

"What you are looking at is normal.
At 1301 (times rough) is the Japan earthquake being noticed by the sensors.
At 1315-1345, the waves you see are simply echos and the long waves of the Japanese earthquake arriving.
"
That's what I thought. The excursions on this chart don't look like anything big locally. Rather, they look like these instruments were registering the Japan quake.
It's dangerous to project, based on no knowledge of seismology, and that's what we're seeing here. Someone found the Yellowstone charts and misinterpreted pretty small-scale measurements.

Who has the inside scoop on tsunami warning? How will they know if there is one? You don't. In the ocean, a tsunami is a wave about the size of Ohio, but only 1-2 inches tall. When it reaches shore, the wave builds into a massive wall of water. You basically don't know until it arrives.

True, but, we have some outposts, such as Shemya Island in the Aleutians, which will provide some warning if there are serious tsunami waves heading for mainland AK. Shouldn't bee all that long now.

I was posting post #182 while you answered it here.
Ty, it is hard to monitor the thread, look at charts, and post at same time.

An earthquake in Japan could trigger quakes on the opposite side of the planet, even in Yellowstone Caldera. But that wouldn't necessarily mean the caldera would blow as the two are not necessarily related. The movement of plates could increase pressure and cause it to blow, but could also RELIEVE pressure under the 'dome'.
To: staytrue
really. So the warning system is purely based on earthquake activity?

That went from a watch to a warning, right? Doesn't a warning mean "here it comes"?

Yup. They are now reporting that a tsunami _has_ been generated and providing arrival times. Damage may be none or more than none. They won't know until the tsunami arrives at the first place they can monitor it. Shemya is that place. It's about an hour away from there.

There was a tidal wave in The Abyss? I don't think so. There was a nuclear war- head, a psycho soldier, aliens and a hurricane, but I don't recall a tidal wave.
