LOOKS like the Gray Lady is up to her old tricks again - distorting the picture in Iraq by burying good news and playing up bad.
Just take a look at yesterday's New York Times.
Some of the most important news to come out of Iraq in weeks - a story the Times had a day before anyone else - reported the findings of a Gallup poll of Baghdad residents.

Yet another criticism of the media's negative slant on Iraq. I've seen five or six of these in the last several days. Is something shifting?

You know the jig is up for the media when you have Deomcratic members of Congress slamming them on their coverage of Iraq.

I hope the media's overreach becomes an issue that the media has to discuss and comment on. In other words, I hope that the concept of media negativism regarding Iraq becomes part of the public conversation. It's presently in the "subconscious" public mind -- news junkies and people who think about this stuff (FReepers for instance) know the media has been gaming us -- but it hasn't yet broken through to the mainstream consciousness...or I should say that the first inklings are just now starting to appear.
But there will be a shift and it'll happen quickly -- the public will say "oh, so that's why things have seemed so screwed up". So far there has been no reason for the public *not* to draw the conclusions about Iraq that the media would like it to draw, and this is showing up clearly in the polls, but now there will be reason to doubt. Hopefully the media has undermined itself. Hopefully the media itself now becomes an object of scrutiny.

They ignored another, more complete poll by AEI and Zogby that came out two weeks ago, as well. That one showed even more support for the US.
The Iraqis want us to stay at least a year. They are not interested in an Islamist state lead by a fanatical Mullah.
The mainstream press mostly buried the story.

This Iraq ploy by the democrats is a high risk operation. It's like a rubber band being pulled tighter and tighter. Bush's reelection prospects ar just fine as long as the economy makes steady progress and as long as Iraq doesn't go downhill. What the press says is irrelevant. Facts on the ground will determine the election.

Well .. from what I can gather .. several congress people have made trips to Iraq and found out the media is lying through it's teeth.
What I've found especially gratifying is that the people complaining the loudest are some democrats who are not afraid to speak up. Of course, you still have your Hillary's shills who will bad mouth anything and everything Bush does .. regardless.
I also think a lot of the complaints have been coming from parents of soldiers in Iraq. I suspect this is why some democrat congressmen went to Iraq - having MAD MOM's in your face all the time can move you to investigate an issue.

Yes, major kudos to Jim Marshall and other dems who are standing up and saying something. It's odd to think that calling out the media for slighting the efforts of our troops would be a risky and brave thing to do, that doing so would be to risk alienation from your party, but that's where the Democrats are these days.
