I disagree on both points:
I know some commentators (liberals) have suggested none of the candidates last night looked sufficiently gubenatorial to justify tossy Davis out, but I think that is a misreading of the level of anger in California. Furthermore, Bustamonte, who is identified with the current cabal in Sacramento, made a stunning admission when he said, simply, we spent too much. It was stunning because it made him look foolish, but I think it will also reverberate with people to vote for the recall. I can see an ad for Arnold with the sound bite: "When asked how California got into the mess it's in today, the best Gray Davis' Lt. Gov could say was [insert video] "we spent too much." Can you trust such people to continue to run California? Vote for the Terminator and terminate these parasites !"
Secondly, while those who would vote for Tom would vote to recall Davis, how many of them would really stay home? I can't imagine any California Republican or conservative who doesn't think that Davis needs to be yanked for his performance. Would they really cut their noses to spite their faces by sitting out the recall? I don't think so, but, if they do, then they truly deserve every bad thing that happens in California.
I nearly sputtered my soft drink out when I was watching him say that. It was the dumbest thing I ever heard a politician do, and I figured that Arnold had it sewn up right at that point.
