BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Eight U.S. soldiers were wounded and their vehicle destroyed when their convoy was attacked in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul Thursday, a U.S. military spokeswoman said.
"At 0910 (1:10 a.m. EDT) this morning there was a complex attack on a two-vehicle convoy in western Mosul," the spokeswoman said.
"The attack consisted of two IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) followed by small arms fire. Eight soldiers were wounded in action, three seriously. One Humvee was destroyed."
The attack was the latest in a series aimed at Western targets in Iraq. Also Thursday, a bomb at a Baghdad hotel used by a U.S. television network killed a Somali security guard.
An Iraqi security official died in an attack on the United Nations compound in the capital on Monday and on Wednesday a roadside bomb intended for a U.S. convoy hit two civilian buses, killing one Iraqi.
Guerrilla attacks have killed 79 U.S. soldiers in Iraq since Washington declared major combat over on May 1. Many more have been wounded.
