500 meters is about 1,625 feet, which is almost one third of a MILE. Not close at all.

Given any of my rifles and a target at 500 meters, I'd like to show you how close it really is. Or just stand 500 meters from the impact point of a 2,000 lb explosive - the thump from that almost stops your heart. (And the shrapnel travels a lot farther than that still red hot.) Anything within 100 meters of a JDAM is dead, and injuries are 50% at 200 meters. Still far away? No. If a MOAB had been used - or a Daisy Cutter, 500 meters is within the killing radius.
