Other German ships did this right after 9-11 as well. And German soldiers lined the streets to salute the wounded from Iraq last spring as the ambulances went by.
Their chancellor is an idiot, but the German military are a different breed. Much different than their grandfathers who my father chased across North Africa...but I digress.
Thanks German Navy. At least you didn't give us the finger like the French...

Considering the circumstances the German military preformed very professionaly in WWII considering they had to fight almost everyone. Rommel was never a Nazi.

Thanks German Navy. At least you didn't give us the finger like the French...Also keep in mind, that the Wehrmacht in WW2 never/grudgingly agreed with the NSDAP politics.
Therefore Hitler's need of the SS to control the Army/Navy to keep them at bay.So sez the History!.

German soldiers are told that all soldiers of NATO-countries should be considered as comrades. And indeed, if it comes to a war to defend the NATO-territory (thank God this is very unlikey), we don´t know any nationalities (within our rows) anymore: there are just NATO-armed forces and our enemies!

Their chancellor is an idiot, but the German military are a different breed. Dang straight. We can think of the current German forces as being much like the US forces under Clinton: Obeying the man because he is the elected choice of the people, but not respecting him, and being loathed in return.
Much different than their grandfathers who my father chased across North Africa...but I digress.
Actually, part of the function of the SS was the same as the Republican Guards and the Special Republican Guard (etc. ad nauseum) was in Iraq: Keep an eye on the army and make sure nobody tries to grow a brain and take out the tyrants. A lot of Wermacht and Kriegsmarine guys were in it for the Fatherland, not for Nazism.

Yeah, this more than makes up for all their backchannel obstruction, provision of arms and aid to saddam, things are all better now.
Germans are good at one thing: losing wars big time. What other country has had its national capital leveled like berlin?

As long as we remain optimistic about our fellow humans and cynical about those alien creatures known as politicians, there may yet be hope for life on this planet.
