Thank you for directing me to a national poll about a race in California -- an online poll at that.

I polled all the farm animals in Elk Grove and they support Larry Flint by over 91%.

I believe I mentioned in my post that Reagan was persuasive -- that's why he was able to get so relatively much done, despite Dem majority opposition.

I base my supposition that Ahnold will be a big spending RINO on his actions on behalf of that $400 million preschool care program a few years ago, and not on his words. I will continue to believe that he is a Kennedy in RINO clothing until his actions prove otherwise.

I did not mean to imply that McClintock would be any more effective. Probably less. Being a conservative, he'd probably be drawn and quartered by the media, same as Newt and his crew were after '94.

Might be best to let Davis stay in and completely screw up what's left. Maybe what it'll take for CA to respond favorably to a reasoned conservative message is the flight of all its wealth (except for Hollyweird, which is insulated from reality) and the complete destruction of a once vibrant economy to cater to illegals and leeches. I still hope that the trend can turn, short of that. That would not be good for any of us, Californian or not.

Let me add to your little story. Jim Brulte has worked hard with tribes such as San Manuel to diversify their economic development, as well as a supporter of Indian gaming. Arnold's campaign has recently turned to a 'fair share' concept in regards to gaming compacts with the tribes. Undoubtably, that's the Pete speaking in the background.

By supporting Arnold, Brulte just cost himself at least a million dollars in personal funds that he would have earned from the tribes after his term in the state senate ends. The tribes will now view their former friend as an enemy.

Anyway, this endorsement is coming at enormous personal cost, and I'm calling him to thank him for having the guts to do so.

Of all the high minded kool-aid drinking bull-crud I've seen in this debate, this argument has got to be the worst. Maybe we should let the state be destroyed so that we can walk in and become the savior? That's just innane.

If you create a total welfare state (not that it would take California much longer to reach that point,) you ensure that Democrats will always win the state. They're the ones handing out the prizes for being a criminal and for not being gainfully employed. Any hope you had for Republican candidates goes out the window, not to mention control of the house.

With Davis or Bustamante, destruction, as you pointed out, is assured. Not a maybe, not a possibility, but assured. Arnold, in my view, will counter that destruction, but at the end of the day he is still an unknown. If you put a dead cat into the Schrodinger's box, you will just get a dead cat out.

The 'Mexifornia' that many are worried about will occur. If economic flight out of the state was fierce up to this point, you haven't seen anything yet. Small business, the economic backbone of not only California's economy but of the nation, will pick up and move away. Likely throwing the national economy into a huge recession, just when it looked like there was light at the end of the tunnel. With Arnold, it might not occur.

The 400 million after-school funding that everyone decries as being this huge liberal spend-fest serves a legitimate interest. The majority of kids in California have one or two parents who are working when they get out of school. Pre-teen pregnancy in this state is on the rise. Did you read that? Pre-teen. Is there anyone on this site who thinks that children should be unsupervised? These after-school programs provide supervision and contribute to better school performance because many of them offer homework help and after-school tutoring.

I don't know how things are in your state, but here in California we're suffering from an out of control government, infrastructure that barely holds up in day to day use, an educational system that has failed from too many experiments, and a conversion from a production economy to a service economy. Arnold can be all the big-spender he wants to be - we have the money for it, so long as the waste is cut out of the state government and I think he has the best chance of doing so of all the candidates out there.

Sorry if I gave the impression I wished CA to go in the dumper. I'm merely afraid that things might have to get a lot worse for the sheeple there (or most places, for that matter) for them to be truly receptive to another way of conducting public policy. Politicians now know that the public currently responds favorably to only one stimulus: profligate spending on an endless laundry list of goodies and pork, much of which is best left to the private sector and competitive pressures, and they conduct public policy to reflect that fact. In CA's case, I'm afraid that if, indeed, Arnold tightens up on spending, the voters, as they presently think, will happily put a Dem back in next cycle, and that'll make it even harder to get the whole thing back under control in the future.

As you surmise, I am not a Californian. Indeed in my home state of NC, we also have a deficit (not $38B, but still a big issue -- heck, our whole budget is <$20B) caused by the same things -- politicians trying to buy our votes with all manner of wasting of our hard-earned dollars.

It is obviously your perception that with Arnold, at least there is some chance of a return to a semblance of fiscal discipline. I certainly have no standing to dispute you on that. Indeed, if he is not completely bought and paid for by every manner of special interest, as Davis and Bustamante are, there is a chance. But no matter what, it will take a measure of courage and self-assurance that very few of our "leaders" (not even Reagan) have consistently demonstrated.

First, I understand. The level of frustration is high enough that washing our hands of the problem seems to be a good idea.

Anyway, yes, it will take a huge measure of courage and self-assurance. With light use of the line item veto, constant bashing of the biggest porkers through the media, and public explainations of why such-and-such program has to go away will dramatically affect the budget, and ultimately the economy.

I think Arnold has a much better chance of using the media to accomplish this than Tom. However, if the roles were reversed, and Tom was ahead, I'd just bite my tongue and pray that Tom would change.

.

Third, Arnold Schwarzenegger is the only Republican that can beat Cruz Bustamante and ensure that, if the voters recall Gray Davis, he is replaced with a Governor who wants to take the state in a different direction.

By his own admission, elkgrovedan hangs out with farm animals.

He does make the perfect TomCruz supporter.

That'd be him on the right.

I am the only candidate at this table who has signed a no-tax pledge. I am the only candidate at this table who supports Proposition 54 to stop the government from racially classifying every one of us. I'm the only candidate at this table that supports the California Republican Assembly's referendum to stop the bill that gives driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. I'm the only candidate at this table who's pro life. I'm the only candidate who supports the entire Bill of Rights, including our Second Amendment. And I'm the only candidate who for 20 years in the public arena has proposed and fought for precisely those fiscal forms that are desperately needed to straighten out this state's finances. Now, we over the years have always been disappointed by politicians who make a promise and don't carry through on it. We've seen a lot of campaign promises made and broken just in the span of this very brief campaign. There's one thing friend and foe alike agrees about Tom McClintock, and that is when I make a promise, I keep it. I steer a straight course and I stay that course no matter what the pressure. And here's my commitment to the people of California: I will cut spending and balance this budget without a tax increase, and that is a promise.

They were a fantastic duo and there wasn't any of the GOP self-mutilation that I was worried about. Tom still insists he won't back out, though :-(

Didn't Brulte co-author and/or support the deregulation scheme a few years back with Steve Peace?
