If Shania said she were going full rock and roll, she would have no problem.
  1. She's already most of the way there.
  2. It wouldn't be a trasparent career saving move. Her career is not on the skids.
Both of these things are true of the Dixie Chicks.

They have a sound that they will need to abandon (no more violins from you Ms. Maguire). They will need to lose a lot of "twang".

Also they don't have the image. Can you really see them on stage next to Marilyn Manson at so MTV awards show. Uh, no.

They will need to take such a low road to get attention away from Britney and Christina Aguilera. They will have to go for really shock stuff, and I don't think they've got it in them. They'll be the vanilla ice cream of the rock world. They will only be noticed for what they put on, not what they do.

They could try to ape other girl groups (such as Destiny's Child, TLC) but I don't think they will be accepted there either.

The only move that might work for them is to go into the singer/activist role such as Melissa Etheridge. (I think this is the way they will go) This means we will be hearing more from them to earn their left wing street cred. They will also need to have a certain amount of "life's difficulties" before this can work. I expect one or more of them to go into detox at Betty Ford.

A woman bought a new Lexus LS400, and returned the next day, complaing that she couldn't figure out the radio worked.

The salesman explained that the radio was voived activated. "Watch this! " he said..."Neslon"
The radio replied, "Ricky or Willie"
"Willy!" he continued...and "On the Road Again" came from the speakers.

The woman drove away happy, and for the next few days, every time she'd say, "Beethoven!", she would get beautiful classical music, and if she said , "Beatles!" she would get one of their upbeat songs.

One day , a couple in a car ran a red light and nearly creamed her new car, she swerved in time to avoid them. "A$$HOLES!" she yelled.

Then the French National Anthem, sung by the Dixie Chicks, began to play.

When I heard Kofi Annan today say that he was going to appoint a group of "personalities" (his word) to study to need for reform in the U.N., I immediately thought of Bill Clinton and the Dixie Chicks.

I hope he does better.

Too bad, so sad. Their music was really good, too.

Their music was Country Music for Little Girls. Strictly teeny-bopper. Pure garbage, not worthy of being stocked in the same record store section as the immortals of Country Music.

May I recommend any CD featuring the music of Patsy Cline? The vocal range, passion, and maturity come shining through 40 years after her untimely death.

By comparison, the Dixie Chicks aren't fit for dog food jingles. Of course, most every modern female singer pales by comparison...

The previously country Dixie Chicks showing up in rock'n roll could be like the motor home Christmas Vacation and maybe just as welcomed.

"The support we got came from others, like Bruce Springsteen."

My former favorite rocker. How disappointing.

It's not true that "The Dixie Chicks say they don't want to be a country music band any more."

I looked up the original interview, and it's pretty clear that the Chicks were just saying that the country music scene abandoned them - that they don't have a home there anymore (no news there).

They did say that they consider themselves part of the "rock & roll" community, though I'd have to assume that what they were refering to would be better described as the "pop music" community (no news there also - Shania Twain, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes and other country artists also have wide cross-over appeal.)

The Chicks never said that they don't want to be a country band, or that they're making any change at all.

I've noticed there's a lotta demand for dumb-as-a-rock violinists in rock and roll. Isn't that what Elvis played?

And country music performers and fans across America say 'good riddance to bad company.'
