There are some subjects many reporters don't touch with politicians, and patronage for themselves is usually one of them. They still need politicians to drop dimes and use as a source of information and if you report too much on their money-making ventures, they won't call you or answer your questions.

That's the same logic CNN used when they covered up Saddam Hussein's atrocities so they wouldn't lose their access.
