Nine soldiers were killed by Islamic extremists at Oued Djemaâ in the Aïn Defla region, 140 kilometres (85 miles) east of the capital Algiers, newspaper reports said Thursday.
The soldiers were operating in the mountainous sector on Wednesday when their progress was halted by homemade bombs and they came under fire from suspected members of the hardline Armed Islamic Group (GIA).
Their attackers stole their weapons before fleeing into a neighbouring forest, the reports said.
The latest victims take the number of people killed this month in violence involving Islamic militants to at least 12, according to estimates based on officials and press reports.
The GIA is one of two extremist groups that have been battling the Algerian government for more than a decade in a bid to establish an Islamic republic.
The two groups have refused to lay down their arms in the country's brutal civil war, which has claimed some 150,000 lives since 1992, while thousands of fighters surrendered under an amnesty program in 1999.
Around 700 people have been killed so far this year.

No, they would be Algerian soldiers. They are just as dead, though.

Thank you.

Makes me feel sick.

Who was the general that executed a number of muslim terrorists in the Phillippines, buried them in a pit, covered with the entrails and blood of several pigs, and told one remaining terrorist to go back and tell the others what he saw?
Did that really happen, and did it really work as well as the story said?

Don't worry, it's just a few "radical" Muslims. Most of them are peace loving, gentle folks. That's what I keep hearing anyway.

The forgotten front; Algeria's long, bloody, brutal war with jihadis.
Ignored by most.

See, it's a quagmire, and it's all the fault of the Bush administration. Clearly the Algerians don't want the, um, Algerians there.
