Gov. Davis Campaigns in San Francisco Gay District

Sat September 20, 2003 08:33 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Gray Davis, facing a recall election scheduled for less than three weeks away, cited his support for same-sex couples on Saturday as he campaigned in the heart of San Francisco's gay district.

Davis on Friday signed a law that extends the rights and responsibilities of gay and lesbian couples, providing for access to family court, alimony and child support.

"A family is a family not because of gender, but because of values," he told a small but enthusiastic crowd of supporters in the Castro district, the symbolic heart of San Francisco's gay community.

Davis, who has come under fire for California's budget problems, told the crowd: "Let's recall the president of the United States, which went from the biggest surplus in history to the biggest deficit."

North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, one of the 10 Democrats in the 2004 presidential race, appeared with Davis on Saturday.

"What we need to do is end this circus now and send the Republicans a message on recall day," Edwards told the crowd.

On Friday, a federal appeals court agreed to reconsider an earlier ruling which would have postponed the recall until error-prone punch card ballots used in some counties could be replaced.

Movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, and Lieutenant Gov. Cruz Bustamante, a Democrat, are the leading contenders to replace Davis if the recall succeeds.

"A family is a family not because of gender, but because of values,"

Wonder what values he has in mind.

Ah yes, the old Clinton strategy of deflecting the argument. Never mind his own failings. Just do the same old song and dance.

Here's one of the reasons why davis will lose the recall...

The gay population makes up only 5-10% of adults. And even then, I would say only 1/3 to 1/2 of them vote.
Most latinos can't vote legally.
He's is signing radical, leftist legislation meant to solidify his "base."

When you appeal to the fringe element during a campaign, and do nothing to court the middle of the road voters, you are setting yourself up for a fall. I expect the recall will pass by a much larger percentage than the current polls suggest.

I'm going to predict at least 60% vote in favor of recall.

"I thought the entire city was the gay district."

A common misperception. The majority population of San Fransicko is not gays, it is bums! Legions of bums. Platoons of bums hanging on every street corner. Bums hassling anyone walking by who doesn't look like a bum. Bums peeing in the street and defecating in doorways. Bums staring at you as you walk by. Bums getting in your face and demanding money. Bums standing on the street corner, screaming incoherently while soaked in booze, urine and feces. Bums everywhere. Nothing but bums, bums and more bums. Bums on the sidewalks, bums in the streets, bums in the doorways and bums in the alleys. Bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums and more bums.

(Music rises, swelling with the beat )

Bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, bums, and even more bums.

This is REALLY good news. Look, if Gay Davis has to campaign in the gay district, it means he isn't sure he's going to get their votes. He's tryin' hard as hell to get what should be EASY votes.

Give it up, GD. You're gone.

I like Tony Ribera. But I'm going to vote for Gavin Newsom, I want to WIN.

If you are interested go here: http://www.gavinnewsom.com/

For a San Franciscan he's pretty conservative. Lots of the lefties here hate him as much as they hate Ashcroft. Which to me is the reason to vote for the guy.

That's just gay.

LOL. Well he's got the single chick vote sewed up in this city. And the wealthy. And a lot of gays, believe it or not, will vote for him because of his looks!

I think he'll win. Good.
