MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) -- Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's party suffered its worst election defeat in Bavaria since World War Two on Sunday, beaten in Germany's second most populous state by the conservatives for the 13th time in a row.
Schroeder's Social Democrats fell more than 10 points to 18.5 percent in Bavaria, according to a television exit poll released after polling stations closed at 6 p.m. (1600 GMT).

Gott sei dank! Bayern ist nicht Deutschland.

Yeah, Bavaria is always special. I love Bavaria, and it seems to me that Bavarians tend more to think like Americans regarding self-responsibility, pursuit of happiness, etc. Bavarians are social, but they´re not as socialist as e.g. the people in East Germany.

I don´t think that the President will do so. It´s unusual that the leader of the free world congratulates a re-elected State PM of an allied nation. But then again, Bush spoke to Hessian PM Koch (also a German Conservative) when Koch visited the White House this year.
Nevertheless, this is indeed a historical victory and, more important, another slap into Schröders face by the German voters!

Bavarian Creme donuts are awesome
To: Johnbalaya
LOL, what do you exactly mean with that? We have plenty of proudcts in our bakeries. Did you know that Germany is the world champion in bread-baking? We´ve more than 320 different sorts of bread. So what kind of creme was it? Vanilla?
The Bavarians have proven today, that they´re not only good in beer-brewing and white-sausage-making, no, they´re clever in politics too. Thank you Bavaria, for giving my party a 2/3 majority in the state parliament!

LOL, it is a popular American Donut my German friend. Bavarian Creme (available at Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme if you should come to visit the US) is a sugar powdered donut (no hole) filled with a yellowish vanilla tasting creme. Very very good for making one fat and happy!

Ah, :-D ic!!
Unfortunately, Dunkin Donuts Deutschland is only in Berlin - a place where I´m not too often. But whenever I am there, I buy Donuts, lots of donuts!
Some months to go, then I´ll be in the US again... or don´t you call CA part of the US anymore? I guess that depends on Oct 7th vote... right? ;)

And despite all the calls for immediate pullout of US troops out of my country, I´m grateful for having (had) them here. They´re welcome, I haven´t heart anything else here.

It was a good weekend for Edmund Stoiber. Yesterday, he watched Christian Ude tap the first keg of Oktoberfest. Today, he continued the theme by pounding the SPD in the bunghole.

The plans to close many bases in Germany was in the works long before Germany's refusal to help us in Iraq.

I know and it´s understandable. Unfortunately, the ´right´ states will be affected by that. Everyone will understand that the DoD sees no sense in keeping so many GI´s in a country that is surrounded by friends. What I will not accept is, when the US take back their security guarantee they gave us (defending our territory with nukes in case of an attack with NBC-weapons), but that is definitely not going to happen.

My wife and I were in Munich and Fussen in April of this year. There is no better beer in the World than Bavarian beer and the sausages were outstanding. My wife thought she would dislike Bavaria and instead fell in love with it. I hope you have as good a time in the U.S., as we did in Munich and Fussen.
