More like sad, Mark. On their return from conquest, Roman generals had a slave who whispered in their ear "remember you are just mortal," as their rode through the cheering crowds. Even pagan Romans, with whom we find so much in common in other matters, realized that no matter how big our feat, how ciivlized and superior our state, human failing is within us, lest we be quick to judge others, and hold them to a higher standard.
Ours is to condemn the wrong, for we know what is wrong, but not to think we are without sin.
